To be really upset that ‘Neighbours’ has been axed?

I know it sounds ridiculous, but I was really sad to hear that it’s looking like it will be axed later in the year. I’ve watched it all my life and whilst I know it’s cheesy it’s such an easy show to watch, you can miss loads of episodes and just pick it up again as you left off. Not like the U.K soaps at all. It’s always been there and I actually feel very sad to hear it’s coming to an end. I’m not sure I’d able to watch the last episode, it would be like Brookside all over again (and that should never have been axed).

I haven't watched it since the late 1980s but I saw the news article. The Australian company that make it are trying to find a new 'UK partner' because Channel 5 no longer want it - so it might not be axed, it might move to another channel or onto a streaming service.

I’m gutted! I still religiously watch it Confused

Theunamedcat · 06/02/2022 11:17

It's still going??

ItsSnowJokes · 06/02/2022 11:19

This is my guilty "shut off from work" pleasure. I watch it to wind down and have watched it since the beginning. I will be gutted if they axe it completely. I hope another channel take it on.

Ilikewinter · 06/02/2022 11:22

Im gutted 😫

TatianaBis · 06/02/2022 11:24

Home and Away?

Ekerty72 · 06/02/2022 11:26

Gutted as well, it's my little bit of escapism!

kitkatsky · 06/02/2022 11:29

YANBU! I've got so invested in it while on mat leave. It's my one half an hour of the day I get to myself to do what I want! There's a petition on change.org

Lanaaaa · 06/02/2022 11:32

I stopped watching it in about 2007 when they moved to Channel 5 - the little Yorkshire town I was living in couldn’t receive Channel 5, so it was cruelly snatched away from me! I do have fond memories of watching it after school with a Muller crunch corner - sad to hear it’s actually going for good!

AllyBama · 06/02/2022 11:54

Aussie here - don’t worry, Neighbours will continue to be produced here for a million years (as per corrie and east enders) and I’m sure another UK channel will pick it up because it has such a massive following there. It probably has a bigger viewership than here due to the population size!

gogohm · 06/02/2022 12:06

It's not being axed per se, channel 5 aren't renewing their contract to show it that's all - another network may pick it up or they may offer it to channel 5 at a more attractive price ... channel 5 outbid the bbc to get the rights many years ago, I haven't watched it since

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 06/02/2022 12:10

I know it sounds ridiculous
Correct YABU

InglouriousBasterd · 06/02/2022 12:16

YANBU - I’ve watched it since I was a toddler (my first memory is of mum picking me up from morning nursery and coming home to watch Neighbours with a sandwich!)

If they can’t find a U.K. partner it will be cancelled in Australia too as Channel 5 largely fund it, apparently. I’m not sure who it will be picked up by - it might go to a streaming service?

HufflepuffPride · 06/02/2022 13:04

No it’s definitely going altogether if they can’t find another broadcast partner.

It's not been cancelled OP. Just Channel 5 will not be renewing their contract with Freemantle media. So there is some uncertainty as Channel 5 was one of Freemantles main investors. However they are confident that they will find another investor somewhere so they can continue to produce the show. I'm sure another UK freeview channel will take it up

Dishwashersaurous · 06/02/2022 13:28

Channel 5 basically pay for it to be made because its not shown in Australia anymore. So unless another uk channel steps in, it will be gone forever......

This is it. I don’t think people get it. It will be gone before the end of the year.

Although just imagine the last episode.

Maybe a bomb in Ramsey Street killing everyone.....

HufflepuffPride · 06/02/2022 13:34

The actress who plays Sheila Canning has confirmed it on Twitter.

I haven’t watched neighbours for about 30 years, but I understand what you mean OP. I’d feel the same if Coronation Street was axed or even Eastenders ( although it’s mostly absolute crap these days), it’d be like the end of an era. I was gutted when Brookside ended-absolutely loved that show and had a massive crush on Barry…..omg his eyes. Blush

AlternativePerspective · 06/02/2022 13:38

About bloody time.

Used to watch it but it’s become so far-fetched now it’s just shite.

But even years ago an Australian friend told me that the only reason they make it any more is because of the UK market.

Although I am pmsl that someone actually put up a petition. 😂.

FlamingoQueen · 06/02/2022 13:45

I am gutted. Have watched it from the beginning. I would rather they finished it all together though, than it carrying on in Oz and we can’t see it.
They have threatened this before though.

Scrystal · 06/02/2022 13:47

Ahhhh, I'm sad too but only for nostalgic reasons... My friend and I used to walk home at school lunchbreak and watch it with our lunch! Just.. 😥

PineappleIceCream · 06/02/2022 13:51

I’m really upset to hear this too. Have watched it since before I can remember. It seems over the top and I’m sure some people would find it ridiculous, but having something there everyday throughout the years is almost quite comforting so I’ll be very sad to see it go if that’s what happens.

CaveMum · 06/02/2022 13:54

I haven’t watched it for about 15 years but used to watch it religiously! I remember working with an Australian girl 20-odd years ago (she’d come over here to work) and she was amazed at how loved the show was - she didn’t know a single person back home who watched it as they all thought it was so cheesy Grin
