To think this should tell you something?

Every member of your team is nominated for the "best team player" award at work but you.

AIBU to think this should tell you something about how you are perceived at work?

Are they all nominating each other?

Batshittery · 05/02/2022 14:59

It sounds a bit mean to me.

Notimeforaname · 05/02/2022 14:59

I wouldn't spend that much personal time thinking about work or a work award.

FourEyesGood · 05/02/2022 15:01

It could imply various things:
You’re not a team player.
The rest of the team are cliquey and have found a way to exclude you.
Your work is not valued.
Your workplace has found a way of trying to tell you that your work is substandard (or that you’re not a team player) but they’re too cowardly to address this head-on so are doing it in a passive-aggressive way.

@HollowTalk

Are they all nominating each other?
It's an anonymous nomination sort of thing.

'best team player' vote
Oh, the irony.

I'd be happy not to have been nominated.

UserBot9to5 · 05/02/2022 15:20

Yes, it would make me think I should be doing less.

I wouldn't want to handle it in a passive aggressive way though.

I'd go to my manager and say that I was very surprised not to have been nominated for my hard work given that the others were. Practically anything can be a popularity contest though.

Also, it's what you're seen to be doing. Tell your boss honestly that you don't want to have to fit blowing your own trumpet in to your schedule now on top of the hard work but if there is a perception that you're not working as hard as the others, does boss agree? Is boss influenced by these little nominations?

UserBot9to5 · 05/02/2022 15:22

I did work in a shitty place once where they all froze me out and when the manager sacked me she mentioned to me that I didn't fit in to the team. I had gone in every day with a smile staple gunned to my face. I had the resilience to do that. I had the professional ability to work, smiling alongside insecure wagons. But she chose the wagons!

IncompleteSenten · 05/02/2022 15:22

None of the person's co workers are nominating them for a reason.
What that reason is is impossible to say without knowing them.
The person could be a twat, lazy, incompetent, or a victim of workplace bullies or some form of discrimination.

Fairyliz · 05/02/2022 15:23

It would be telling me that this is a workplace with poor management.
Either there’s bullying going on with people nominating each other and excluding someone, or alternatively the person not nominated is rubbish at their job but management are just ignoring it.
Either way it doesn’t look a good place to work.

Woahthehorsey · 05/02/2022 15:36

This is interesting.

I'm not the person who wasn't nominated, nor am I in their team. I do work on a different team, I wasn't nominated but neither was anyone else in my team (we don't 'do' the awards).

I assumed that the person not nominated would see that they weren't considered a team player, but it's clear from the responses that that's my own bias due to my feelings about this person. I am aware that their lack of commitment to work has been brought up by their manager, and their previous manager.
