To think MN users have too much time

I absolutely do not mean this in a bad way. I really really don't. But I have found myself (mother of 2 works full time!) to often wonder how people have the time to be so invested in MN! So many people have such super long replies for people they don't know. I barely have the time to reply to my friends on WhatsApp! Yes, I'm starting a thread now, and have very rarely, but gosh I applaud you all. Thank you for supporting all the women and men who have questions / dilemmas. But should we not be supporting each other face to face? Silly question really, I've had support on here before, but does anyone else think it's strange?

You're spending time posting a post asking about people wasting time posting Mumsnet?

TheChip · 03/02/2022 23:18

No I don't think it is that strange to be honest. Many people spend hours and hours online these days.
It kind of reminds me of those take a break magazine's, but in more real time.
As for face to face, with really bad social phobia I don't get much face to face with anyone other than family. I'd imagine many others are in similar boats.

SmithofSilver · 03/02/2022 23:18

Well I'm lying in bed now. What women and men should I be supporting face to face from here?

I get the irony. I don't mean it in a bad way at all, I do it!!! But I do think it's strange!

I usually have a quick look when taking five mins, some people are fast typers, ect, or sometimes I place mark, then when I can later respond in detail I try to. It's a mix of to as and when really
bloodywhitecat · 03/02/2022 23:22

I kill time on here mainly at night time as a distraction from what is going on at home. I can't sleep so I MN instead.

Sandinmyknickers · 03/02/2022 23:22

I'm sorry you feel you don't have time to reply to your friends. I do think that is a (common and not just used by you) excuse though. We make time for the things that matter to us...

teaandchocolate1 · 03/02/2022 23:23

I am a fast typer and sometimes I start a post/reply, put my phone to the side, do something else and continue writing it after 20 minutes.

I work full time and have a toddler, but still manage to spend lots of time on mumsnet 😂

I'm sorry. I guess I hadn't factored this in either. As I said I didn't mean to offend at all, just keen to understand people's purpose for it really.

Not everyone wants our advice face to face - so it's easier to dole it out to people actually asking for advice. I go in peaks and troughs though. So maybe we all do that and no one is that constant

InisnaBro · 03/02/2022 23:26

Maybe we all are just better at managing our time than you are? (Work FT, parent, managing house renovation, social life.)

Luredbyapomegranate · 03/02/2022 23:28

You could make time to talk to your friends if you wanted to prioritise that though. If you looked at your week you could make the space, you just don’t because it’s too tiring, or because you (as so many of us have) bought into the myth everyone is too busy for everything. We aren’t really, it’s just a form of anxiety. Most of us aren’t doing 6 hour i hour days in a factory, and none of us are washing clothes with a mangle.

MN is just down time.

Luredbyapomegranate · 03/02/2022 23:29

… 6 10 hour days in a factory, I mean

A very personal choice. Grin

Hands up, I joined because of lockdown loneliness. But I belonged to a different board before, you can chat or ask advice and know you are nit disturbing anyone.
