Bike stolen but nothing on CCTV

Around 2 weeks ago i had an expensive bike stolen from my houseshare. Live with 7 others. I did leave it in our hall which i know was stupid but there's no point punishing myself forever.

You think keeping it inside is enough but obviously not. Someone must have left the door unlocked.

There's no insurance claim as it wasn't in my own room as such but it couldn't fit in.
Anyway I was devastated but started to move on.

I reported it to the police.. there is a public building directly opposite which has CCTV. The Police asked them to check it between the hours i brought it back and the hour I noticed it had gone.

They did and they said that they saw nothing whatsoever.
I really don't understand. Surely if someone had taken it they would be seen on CCTV leaving my house with it.

There's nothing more that can be done. A few weeks back one of the housemates was asking me about it, how much it costed etc. And now it's got me thinking twice.

It's just bizarre and i don't understand. I will never know but i will be sticking to cheap bikes from now on. Any ideas?

There's also no proof of a break in whatsoever

In one of the flats

It could be.. but who would have the audacity really? It's not a massive house, surely I would notice them using it

Sounds like a neighbour may have taken it but without proof there is sod all you can do about it.

The bike was definitely not there by 11pm. We live just off a main road too surrounded by plenty of houses. I honestly find it hard to believe that someone would just decide to break into our house in the middle of the day in front of a public place and just try their luck, but maybe I'm naive

Honestly wonder if it was him asking how much it was.
It's a shame I can't have the police search their rooms but i can't really can i? I've got no right..

We've also had parcel theft too. It makes me so angry

Could be that they didn't actually check the CCTV and are just fobbing you off because they can't be bothered with a bike theft.

freecuthbert · 03/02/2022 17:38

One of your housemates might have sold it. Had it in their room until it was sold, but you already noticed missing before then so not within the time the CCTV was checked for.

It's definitely plausible that the CCTV didn't catch anything.
Where I work we have CCTV that covers the outside of our property, but it's carefully positioned to get as little as possible of outside of our land.

I did check CCTV for a stolen bike that probably was taken on the road past our building a few months ago. We did see the bottom end of 2 wheels and a foot-very distant and smudged, but not enough to even identify that it was the correct bike.

I do think they genuinely checked as if they would have just given me a crime number and not bothered getting in contact after surely?

I've asked the housemates on the WhatsApp group if they saw anyone unusual enter the house that evening but nobody replied..

Did another house occupant put it in their house. Then wait for you to discover it's gone, then take it elsewhere after you've gone out for the day

Ridiculeisnothingtobescaredof · 03/02/2022 18:15

It's very possible.. pretty sad to think you're sharing a house with thieves.

This is like Sherlock. Back door?

Ridiculeisnothingtobescaredof · 03/02/2022 18:17

No there's only the front door..

Can you go round and ask to borrow something like a cup of sugar? Maybe the thief is daft enough to leave it in his hall, and you can then pretend he found it and is keeping it safe for you...take a mate if you need to!

junglejane66 · 03/02/2022 19:16

......... I came out of the shop and there was my bike, gone!
