To ask if you can help me with a little side hustle idea

Hi mumsnetters
Posting in aibu for traffic. I'm looking to start a little side business while at home with the kids. Does anyone know where I might be able to buy these in bulk? they are nylon pouches which can be personalised. I've got the means by which to personalise them but need to source the pouches themselves! Any help much appreciated!

Alibaba?
AliExpress
DHGate

There may be vat added to the price from UK customs though.

Fabpinky · 01/02/2022 14:28

Yes AliExpress

EishetChayil · 01/02/2022 15:14

The world doesn't need any more Alipay tat, no matter how beautifully personalised. Use your time and energy for something else!

elp30 · 01/02/2022 15:31

That was rude, @EishetChayil

I have a pouch just like those the OP is offering that I keep in my handbag. If there was one going with personalization, I'd have gone for it.

Just because it may not be useful to you, doesn't mean someone else couldn't use it.

There's a phrase that applies to you, "If you have nothing nice to say (or useful), don't say anything at all".

I was hoping to source closer to home. It's just an idea I had as it was something I was trying to find for myself anyway!

It was a harsh way of saying it, but it’s not a great business idea - there are literally hundreds of sellers on all the crafty and selling platforms doing the same thing with personalised pouches and purses.

You’ll need to source cheap and in bulk like this: m.alibaba.com/pla_detail.html?mark=google_shopping&biz=pla_wap&keyword=Cosmetic%20Bags%20&%20Cases&product_id=62517516545&cid=152407&language=en&device_type=wap&channelType=google&currency=USD&pcate=152407&pcy=gb&src=sem_ggl&from=sem_ggl&cmpgn=12058145687&adgrp=115623119665&fditm=&tgt=pla-1545918019116&locintrst=&locphyscl=1006886&mtchtyp=&ntwrk=u&device=m&dvcmdl=&creative=491036487823&plcmnt=&plcmntcat=&p1=&p2=&aceid=&position=&localKeyword=&pla_prdid=62517516545_uplift&pla_country=GB&pla_lang=en&gclid=Cj0KCQiA0eOPBhCGARIsAFIwTs6hjZRp8fMTra3l3_q5kyxaC_JaChWzWLTEMxuEeWHvEW7eyYtP7OEaAqboEALw_wcB

“Closer to home” is going to mean more expensive and the profit margin on this sort of product is already pennies because they’re so common.

Are you any good at making something which is an actual skill that other people can’t easily replicate? That would be more profitable.

inappropriateraspberry · 01/02/2022 16:26

Do a Google reverse image search with that picture - it will probably show you.
But honestly, I think there are so many similar things people are doing, the market is flooded with personalised stuff. I'd find something a little more niche.

sanbeiji · 01/02/2022 16:41

How did you not manage to find one for yourself? There are loads on Etsy, Ebay, everywhere.

If yours is something special then you don’t need to go for the cheapest. Wholesale/trade websites might be able to help.

Best bet is to make the pouches yourself. Would add a lot more value and if you use sustainable materials there are people who would pay lots.

ButtockUp · 01/02/2022 16:46

I'm a bit minded to agree with others and say that there's a lot of stuff, particularly on Etsy, which is similar to what you're describing.

Whilst im sure that you might get some sales, I don't think you're going to get much by way of profit.

My example being :- I have a beautiful , reversible, Liberty print tote bag that folds easily into a coat pocket or handbag.
Now im not averse to using a sewing machine but it would have cost me , probably, 3 times as much to source the fabrics and a good couple of hours of my time to make ( it is exceptionally well finished.)
I bought it for a fiver.

The personalisation I can offer is unique ... difficult to explain without showing my hand! I just wanted to find the plain bags. I know everyone is offering them on Etsy etc but they're the finished article and I would be offering something different

There is a Eco Shop in the next small town along from me.

A woman in another local village makes bags, purses, wash bags etc from recycled fabrics, including PVC. (I don't know how eco friendly PVC is?)

The bags etc are really lovely. I have bought them thinking I am doing a Good Thing, without really looking to it.

Does anyone know?

underneaththeash · 01/02/2022 21:43

I can find loads OP. Type in nylon pouch wholesale U.K. and a range of options come up.

DorisFlies · 02/02/2022 07:12

I would love a linen one but not keen on nylon

If you’re genuinely planning to do something unique and skilful then maybe choose a better base product than a cheap nylon pouch - there’s only so much people will pay for something like that, it’s tat, regardless of how lovely the personalised bit is. Cloth bags or linen purses would be nicer.
