To ask if this hairstyle is possible as a perm?

Is it possible to have a perm like this? Spoke with a hairdresser who told me it isn't, but I'm curious of anyone else had it done?

To ask if this hairstyle is possible as a perm?

What reason did they give?

Most of the perms my friends had in the ‘80s looked just like the one in your picture!

StCharlotte · 28/01/2022 22:55

Well they were possible in the 90s...

She's a family member and I asked her daughter to ask her, and she just said it's not possible 🤷‍♀️

I took that exact picture to my hairdresser. And some old SJP sex and the city stills.

Yes it’s possible. I get it with a chemical perm.

It’s tighter than that for the first month but drops into what you want by month 2 and stays that way ….

I use cantu curl cream which is just slightly too heavy for my hair, water it down with water from the tap, then run my hands through my hair and it dries like that but a bit flatter. I then give it a bit of volume with volumising spray.

So yes. You can.

NinaDefoe · 28/01/2022 23:18

Very strange. Maybe the daughter didn’t actually ask her or maybe the family member hairdresser doesn’t know how to do perms/ doesn’t like doing perms.
Go to another hairdresser.
You can get tight or loose perms and everything in between.
‘Body’ perms used to be popular too - A perm that didn’t actually curl your hair but just made it curve so it looked really full.

MatildaTheCat · 28/01/2022 23:20

Yes but not for long.

FloatyBoaty · 28/01/2022 23:25

@MatildaTheCat

I haven’t had my perm freshened for 6 months… have some root regrowth… but am still very able to achieve that with hair products….

Yes Iv had it done twice

saltinesandcoffeecups · 28/01/2022 23:40

It’s a spiral perm. Yes it’s possible, but good luck finding anyone that knows how to do it. I think they still teach the technique (at least in the US) however it really is a skill that most stylists don’t get the experience to develop

How long does it last? How fine is your hair? My hairdresser always tells me no and I want one!!!
pandora206 · 29/01/2022 00:45

Lots of us had hair like that in the 80s thanks to perms, so I'm sure it must be possible. It was so easy to look after too - just wash and condition, comb it through and leave it to dry naturally.

KKslidoff · 29/01/2022 00:51

As someone with naturally curly hair, I personally think the style in that particular picture has been achieved using rollers or tongs. The curls are a bit too perfect, too smooth and too well defined.

Never needed a perm for obvious reasons. But my hair goes a bit like that but less well defined when it's curly.

Magissa · 29/01/2022 00:53

I permed my hair in the mid 80s. Every night I would wind my hair on pink sponge stick rollers to make corkscrew curls. My hair was long and straight otherwise. It is most definitely doable!

Peachandpearl · 29/01/2022 01:26

It absolutely is possible to have curls permed in that style. However, perming is not taught as standard for all hairdressers now and even those that have trained in it often have a limited range of perm styles and experience with perming. I would try and find an experienced stylist who trained during the 80's if you can. Might be hard as most hairdressers do not work actively as stylists all the way to pension age and those that do often it's £££ not £/££

Perms are damaging on your hair like any other chemical process.
I think the finer your hair the more risky it is.

If you have very thick hair it’s less noticeable when the chemicals eventually thin it out.
I want to say ‘fall out’ but that’s not strictly true - basically the chemicals damage your hair and the less hair you have, he more noticeable the damage.

ufucoffee · 03/02/2022 09:05

You'd be lucky to find a hairdresser who can do spiral perming now. That look would be possible with a spiral perm.

Mermaidwaves · 03/02/2022 09:17

Bring back the spiral perm I say! I would definitely have one, I always wanted one as a teen but wasn't allowed.

LittleGwyneth · 03/02/2022 09:48

It doesn't look like any perm I've ever seen, IME they tend to be crinklier and make your hair look terrible quality.

Bear in mind that even if you find someone who can do a spiral perm and they're able to make it look like this, it's not going to look like that when you wake up in the morning, it'll still need a lot of styling.

FloatyBoaty · 03/02/2022 19:51

@BookFiend4Life

My hair is fairly thick- thins out towards the ends if it gets too far past my shoulder, but yeah, I have a healthy amount, and in good condition.

My hairdresser is young (I think late 20s) but she’s a specialist in vintage hair styling and extreme colour- though she wont touch colour treated hair for perming, so you can have one or the other!
