It's just behind my child's ear. The doctor suggested vaseline but I've looked up the internet and seen a thousand of 'better' suggestions. Is it worth spending money on this or will vaseline do the job?

Bio oil is fantastic

draramallama · 27/01/2022 10:35

Silicone gel. It's one of the few strategies recommended by NHS. You can get it from Superdrug, unbranded.

draramallama · 27/01/2022 10:36

Whereas bio oil is not. There's limited evidence for it, unlike silicone gel.

Bio oil

ShippingNews · 27/01/2022 11:08

Silicone gel is used in hospitals for that . It actually works, unlike many products.

Bio oil. I had a small scar removed from tummy, the doctor who performed this op recommended it as the best thing to use. And he was a brilliant doctor.

Plastic surgeon advised silicone gel

Hairyfriend · 27/01/2022 22:25

I too recommend silicone. It comes in a gel form, or as a plastic looking plaster which stays in place for several days (might be a week?), before being changed.

It can take months to be effective, but is worth the effort. Its expensive, but for the tube, you use the tiniest amount only. Check for reviews online.

A surgeon advised me it was the actual act of rubbing/massaging the area that helped more than the actual product used to do this.

toastfiend · 27/01/2022 23:36

Echo the advice re massaging the area being the thing that makes the difference, with some kind of oil or gel so you're not pulling at the skin.

Also, time. I know it's hard, but give it time and it will look much better. I had a mole removed on my leg last year and they warned me I might have a lumpy scar. I can't even see where it was now, honestly. It looked terrible when it was first done but it's faded so as to be almost invisible and I wasn't very diligent about massaging it.

Silicone gel, plus scar massage to prevent or release adhesions

SprinklesMcDoodles · 27/01/2022 23:40

Nivea cream, the one that comes in a wee blue tub. I’ve been having plastic surgery on my face since I was a kid and you’d be hard pressed to see my scars.

jowly · 27/01/2022 23:44

Silicone and massage worked on a keloid scar on my face, as my surgeon said it would.

Is now perfectly smooth.
