My perspective on this changed aged 46 rewatching from when I first watched it 30 years ago. As a teenager I was so caught up in the romance and a bit gutted by the ending, but now I think it was a terrific ending and think Victor is a much better choice.

Yes! I strongly believe the striking ending is part of why it’s such a masterpiece

I agree. A real shift in perspective for me.

I just want to add that I love Claude Rains (Captain Renault) in any shape or form, and this was made during the era when I personally think he really couldn't put a foot wrong in films.
