Workplace rant

I shouldn't let this piss me off but, it is and i really need to vent!

I have worked for my company for nearly 10 years. My last manager and i got on great, how ever after he left i found out he was the reason i was Often over looked for training and promotion, i also found out he took credit for alot of my work. When he left i absorbed about 90%of his role for nearly 8 months until he was replaced.
My new manager is amazing, we were thrown in the deep end together at the start of covid and we just gelled. He has Made sure senior management recognise my work and has pushed and encouraged me.

A couple of years ago a role in another department opened up. My current role actually oversees parts of work generated by this department, but they are paid more. I didn't apply for the role as i had been previously overlooked for training that was needed to meet the essential criteria. Only one person applied. This person has done this role for about 2 years.
Last year they went off ill. Two of the senior manager's tried to juggle the role between them and failed. They asked me and my manager to split it between us.

The job is a piece of piss. There is alot of record keeping/compliance/gdpr etc but it was an establised role with an established system when they started. It should have been a case of just keeping things updated. But oh no.... Within 10mins in that office i had found 5 breeches of gdpr and more H&S violations/mistakes than i could count. Not just little things either, things that potentially could harm a person. I reported It all and worked My arse off to fix it. I have implemented a new filing system (there wasnt one at all, there were literlly several boxes of shite i had to sift through and organise) , fixed any potential risks of gdpr/harm etc. I have received thanks etc from senior management. One manager even said they wished i had been able to apply for the role last time.

But then, I had to go off for Medical reasons. In the run up to my leave i made sure that i made it as easy as Possible for whoever took over next-as it happens my poor boss has basicly been doing 90% of all 3 roles himself!
Anyway my leave is nearly up. My boss is still covering the job. I know they have to give original person their job back etc. But after clearing up that mess, and working my arse off to put it right, then my boss keeping it up, aibu to be pissed off to hear that this person will be returning soon and to that role? I knew it was going to happen, but now it is, it has made me wish I'd put another sick note in!

Sorry for the long winded rant. I was really looking forward to going back to work and this has really soured my mood! So aibu for being pissed off?

Well, yes, YABU to be annoyed that a colleague is expecting their old job back when they come off sick leave, just as you are expecting your job back when you come off sick leave.
All the history about you not having been well managed for years isn't the fault of your colleague.

You could ask to train them on the new systems. You could push for a pay rise - go and negotiate one! Know you’re worth.

I know, i dont know why its got under my skin so much. I knew she was coming back to that role, its her job. I think its the fact that the problems i found amount to major negligence and gross misconduct. Her mistakes could have actually killed a person. Had she have been at work when they were found im pretty sure she would have been severely reprimanded if not sacked. How ever with her been on sick they obviously can't say/do anything.

The system that was in place before them, was so so simple. The templates for ALL of the work were there. There was no reason for over 2 years worth of filling to be unorganised in random boxes. There was no reason for things to be 2yrs out of date. The system i have put in place is very similar to the old system and i can just see the train wreck that is coming.

@BluebellsGreenbells thanks. Ive got a meeting with one of the senior managers next week. I've got a feeling i will be asked to train them, but i will be pushing for More money certainly.

Well, YWNBU to have reported it, and set up a better system. You company's management are now aware that the competencies of the person are questionable, and they will hopefully address that once she is back, but it still doesn't mean she doesn't have the right to come back to her own job.

Incompetentatwork · 27/01/2022 00:27

I never said she didn't have a right to her job. I said i was pissed that someone who is grossly incompetent to the point of neglegance can return to the role and because they have been off sick there is no reprimand, even though had they have been at work when the issue was identified there would have been consequences.

Good rant 8/10 would read again.

Fair enough to be pissed off, but you know she's coming back.

You also know that they will be monitoring her closer now,
