For expecting the hospital to answer the phone

My mom has been poorly in hospital for almost 2 weeks. Things got worse early hours of Monday and they called me to discuss DNR etc, quite a shock as I didn't know things were that bad.

Luckily she improved a little. I managed to get through on the phone by Monday lunchtime but since then the phone is either busy or nobody answers or they tell you to call back as they are busy or they will call me but never do.

AIBU to expect them to tell me how my mom is?

I work in care so I do understand how busy things get but surely talking to relatives especially as the hospital is closed to visitors is part of looking after patients. I've actually given them information they didn't know so it can be helpful to speak to families especially when the person is to ill to speak for themselves.

I'm actually really worried about my mom, things have been very serious and I'm left with no clue as to how she currently is. Is it like it in other hospitals? (This is UK)
