To be a bit worried about war with russia

Carinattheliqorstore1 · 24/01/2022 16:24

I’m probably worrying about nothing (at least I hope I am!) but from the news re the UKraine, I’m beginning to get a wee bit worried about a possible war with Russia. Is that likely at all?

Yanbu: I think it’s likely
Yabu: nah, not going to happen

I’m not sure we would be wading into that one. There may well be an invasion. They’ll probably get away with it.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 24/01/2022 16:31

It will be grim sanctions and an energy war

This, probably.

We are unfeasibly dependent on undependable sources of energy, and Putin knows that right now we're aware of what cold feels like and what heating costs. He'll turn the screw because, why wouldn't he?

It's not like no-one saw this coming years ago, is it?

I think WW3 will be economic, fought by hapless populations over disguised access to natural resources, and won't necessarily involve nuclear weapons.

AngelicaElizaAndPeggy · 24/01/2022 16:40

Agree with previous poster - it seems to be a big sinister game all about brinkmanship and energy prices. And normal people in Russia and Ukraine bearing the brunt of punitive sanctions. Think we are best off out of it and I hope the UK doesn't have to become involved. Apparently Russia won't actually do anything beyond this posturing, though - they are shitting themselves about China invading from the east apparently.

Apologies to anyone who actually knows about geopolitics - I am definitely not an expert as the above clearly shows.

So yes, yanbu.

Phrenologistsfinger · 24/01/2022 16:48

The sheer numbers of troops and hardware amassing on the border is starting to look like it is just too much for Putin to back down from now without losing face. YANBU.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 24/01/2022 17:16

In fact an energy war would be another ‘cold’ warGrin

Yes, and certain western allies could 'lose' this one, unless they're very strategically placed (geo-politically).

The UK has a PM and a Head of State who have not really been thinking this through (and that's being generous).

Tommika · 24/01/2022 17:56

It’s not unreasonable to worry about war, it’s perfectly reasonable to emphasise with anyone who could be at risk.

We won’t go to war with Russia over the Ukraine, but what could happen is proxy warfare conducted under support of opposing factions, or a UN type situation of forces facing each other and limited in their options on the ground of whether to act or not

Putin will sabre rattle and show strength, he won’t be seen to ‘back down’ but may happily take back troops from the border showing his strong they stood up to the west / NATO until everyone took a step back or call the ‘exercise’ as over
Much of the equipment and troops will remain in the area

Any actual warfare will be conducted by ‘separatists’ and there may be people among them without badges on them with equipment that has fresh paint over the markings

The main powers will support each side and avoid interfering with each other

junglejane66 · 24/01/2022 18:04

Still if we have an all out worldwide nuclear war it should reduce COVID cases quite a lot and you probably wouldnt need to wear a mask in the shops anymore

Carinattheliqorstore1 · 24/01/2022 19:20

@junglejane66 always look on the bright side lol

YANBU, however it'll be a Cold War where Putin will win.
I don't know why we're following sleepy Joe into yet another war, just let russia get on with it!

YouCantTourniquetTheTaint · 24/01/2022 19:45

He's waving his willy. War costs money, and Russia isn't doing well economically, they can't afford a war. They might hold energy to ransom however that will negatively impact them too. I believe (and hope) that's its a lot of hot air and my willy is bigger than your willy type of thing.

sst1234 · 24/01/2022 19:49

This is what governments do to justify defence spending. Big pharma and the defence industry always need a crisis. Look into who that largest donors and political lobbyists are. It always goes back to these people. It’s not a conspiracy theory, it’s always been this way at least in the modern age.

Whatever you do, do NOT watch the 1980s documentary called "Threads".
megletthesecond · 24/01/2022 19:57

Putting doesn't want a war. It would impact on his cushy lifestyle.

megletthesecond · 24/01/2022 19:57

Putin even.

wheresmymojo · 24/01/2022 19:58

It is starting to look like he might actually invade...

Russian people are actually against the war - 80% don't want it, with a lot of the 20% being older generations from USSR days.

Unfortunately for the people of Ukraine we don't consider them important enough to go to war with Russia over them.

Probably fortunate for us though.

Postdatedpandemic · 24/01/2022 20:05

Probably best not to watch "Limits to Growth" 50 years later either.

So, what colour kitchen cabinets are going to be fashionable this year?

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 24/01/2022 20:09

I’ve watched Threads. It was filmed in Sheffield where l live. I watched it when l was 15. I was terrified!

Carinattheliqorstore1 · 24/01/2022 21:16

I seen threads a few years ago. Great film. I love apocalyptic films ! Wouldn’t want to live through an apocalypse though

I don't think we can afford to get involved due to the complete fools who are currently running the country. I mean, they don't even have the cognitive abilities to get through a day without fucking something up and causing yet more problems.

DH and I watch a couple of the early eighties docudramas last night. I'm surprised generation X is not far more disfunctional.
DH thinks the reason that plastic bags replaced paper ones at that point in history was down to the prospect of being stuck in a make shift bunker for a fortnight.

The lack of plastic bags to dispose of human waste is a big problem for the homeless of San Francisco I am told.
the80sweregreat · 25/01/2022 19:13

I would just want to die if the nuclear bomb hits
What's the point in surviving any of that ?
