What on Earth do they need this for? What do they actually scrutinise your accounts for?

Who ?

The mortgage broker?
The bank?
The Estate Agent ?

Money laundering. It's to ensure the money has come from a legitimate source. I was a cash buyer through inheritance and had to provide a copy of the will along with bank statements.

It's all about ensuring you're not a money launderer and the money was acquired by legitimate means.

It's a legal requirement not nosiness.
