YouTube wafflers, is it me?

At times YT was quite helpful when looking for DIY info or other things that might be of interest but these days I can rarely get through a video. The amount of waffling that goes on before getting to the point is maddening!

AIBU and lack patience or are so many people simply unable to get to the point?

Oh god yes! Blah, blah, blah blah blah, and then the bit you are actually watching it for is done at lightning speed with no explanation.

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 21/01/2022 13:40

Yeah, they tell you all their weekly shit and then tell you to subscribe, thumbs up etc. before starting. You just have to fast forward through. It's very annoying.

I hate the people who shout as well or record their video in an echoey room.

Chishnfips · 21/01/2022 13:42

Which is why I play of x2 speed for almost every video.

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 21/01/2022 13:43

YANBU.

UserBot999 · 21/01/2022 13:44

Yes, i keep thinking GET ON WITH IT

NoProbLlamaa · 21/01/2022 13:44

It’s to do with earning money from videos - there is an optimum video length and it’s do with the amount of adverts they can fit in.

Agree it’s extremely annoying though

RogerDodger · 21/01/2022 13:45

Or the ones who suddenly leap into showcasing a shower scrubber brush (because there being sponsored) when the video is supposed to be about their eyebrow technique. I close those ones straight away.

Whatwouldscullydo · 21/01/2022 13:47

Oh god yes. That and forgetting their roots. I hate seeing them.all get more ams more "glammed up" becoming completely different people from the ones u started watching.

Whatwouldscullydo · 21/01/2022 13:48

By that I mean less relatable. And their original subject source pushed to the side as if it actually bores them to be reminded if it

Tmwtgg · 21/01/2022 13:48

Likewise recipes online. Here's an amazing recipe for XYZ. Only you'll need to scroll down and down and down, past loads of bollocks about your Great-Granny's method for dredging flour, to eventually get to the ingredients list.

WildFlowerBees · 21/01/2022 13:55

Recently I was looking for a video on tumble dryer very glam I know! but every single one just on and on and on, just show me how to change the drive belt without the enormously long speeches. Some really love the sound of their own voices.

Also 'Hi guys welcome to my channel' ODFOD

gsaoej · 21/01/2022 13:57

I don't mind hi guys welcome to my channel but I don't want to hear any fluffy shit after that - I just want to get to the point of the video!

Agrudge · 21/01/2022 14:17

Yes . You are definitely not being unreasonable.

iklboo · 21/01/2022 15:01

Or those ones with the 'just see how this cake decorating turns out'. Then it's 25 million hours of waffle, faff & gesticulating. One started getting angry emojis and wrote 'looks like people are angry I'm lifting the glass too soon!' Catch on to yourself, mate.

If I can avoid a video I will. Life's too short for sudden segues into the flavour of ice cream they got last night and the totally unrelated adventures of their gran's postman's barber's next-door-neighbour's dog walker's cousin twice removed's gym partner's boyfriend's pet hamster.

Mrsjayy · 21/01/2022 15:06

I think a lot of them are sponsored now so paid to waffle for the "likes*" I was looking for a make up tutorial and my god the waffle is ridiculous I got bored and stopped watching . I think YT is trying to offer content like Instagram .

Mrsjayy · 21/01/2022 15:09

Oh I tried to find something about my new tumble dryer too I think my brain froze with boredom and I found what I was looking for on wiki how instead.

MaryAndHerNet · 21/01/2022 15:13

There's a lot of algorithms on YouTube.
That's one of the reasons so many waffle until the videos are 10minutes and 1 or 2 seconds, feed the algorithm. There's others too, likes and share feed into it.

TeaAndBrie · 21/01/2022 15:18

If you want to monetise a channel then each video has to be over a certain length or it won’t be used for adverts and therefore won’t earn any revenue

God everything comes down to money in the end doesn't it.

Yeah I agree.

My DH wanted to look at a video of a smartphone he was interested in buying. He looked at a few 'unboxing' videos on youtube, and a guide-to-the-phone chats, and the waffle was unbelievable. Rabbit rabbit rabbit. 15 minutes or so to tell DH what they could have told him in 3 minutes. He tries to whizz through, by skipping a minute or two here and there, but then misses important information and has to go back! Very annyoying. Hmm YANBU @WildFlowerBees

Walkacrossthesand · 21/01/2022 18:08

Same thing happens - but with written word - on cookery websites, doesn't it. Find a recipe you like the sound of, click & open, cue paragraphs of waffle before you eventually get to ingredients & method.

But thanks to this thread, the penny has dropped - they're getting more revenue the longer you stay on the page....

I'm so glad I kept good old books, where you can look things up without wading through adverts or being followed around the Internet. Am I really only of any interest as an advertising target, these days?
