Installing a Ring doorbell

Hi everyone, as usual Google has let me down and I am therefore reliant on the MN font of knowledge.

I bought a Ring doorbell on Black Friday but I don’t currently have a bell so nothing to hardwire it into. So I bought the wireless bell with a power pack, but the power pack hasn’t arrived yet.

Can I just attach the Ring doorbell to my front door (or next to it), is it solar powered?

Mine came with a power pack. You need a battery unless it’s wired in.

Is it a wired in or battery version you’ve bought?

Mine charges from the actual device, there isn't a power pack. You just plug it in via USB every couple of weeks (taking off of the door first)

I have a battery one. Didn’t want it hard wired.

Top tip - buy a spare battery and keep it charged. Then it’s a 90 sec job every couple of months to swap them out.

I’m not sure what you mean by you’re waiting for the power pack though…. If you bought the battery operated one, a battery should come with it?

It needs a battery pack, whether hard-wired or not.

We don't have wiring, so bought a second battery so that we always had one charged.

Ring door bells come in two flavours, mains or battery powered. If you got a battery one, there will be a battery in the box which you have to charge before use.

If you hit a mains one, you’ll have to wire in (possibly to an old powered bell wire).

When rung, it’ll trigger an alert on your phone via the Alexa app and on any echo devices. You can also buy a plug in (indoor) chime which is wireless.

It should have a slot for batteries in the back (I seem to remember ) but to charge it you have to take it off. Better to get an electrician to wire it up so you don’t need to remove it to charge it.

Just saw your last. That’s the mains version, so has to be wired in to an existing or new bell wire.

What is the battery pack? I can't see that on Amazon.

Thanks, which version should I buy that doesn't require a doorbell and that has a rechargeable battery so I can buy a spare battery?

I think if you haven't got wiring, you've bought the wrong product.

There is no batter accessory for the one you’ve got. You can wire it in using the mains adaptor you’ve ordered (plug it in somewhere, run wire to door then connect up) or swap it for the battery pack version.

I would have preferred the mains one, but wiring it in would have been a pain due to door/plug locations.

I think the confusion on this thread has come from most of us having a battery one.

So the adaptor plug in pack is the power source. Plug with a cable that gets fed through the wall and connects to the back of the wired Ring doorbell so you need to wait for that plug in thing to arrive.

Thanks everyone. This wired version does seem a cheaper version (£25) when compared to the battery one linked upthread.

However, I much prefer the idea of a battery powered one so will go for that one.
