I'm willing to bet serious money it makes abuse more prevalent, rather than less. It's the same argument that sex work and strip clubs allows men to 'get out' their shit on disposable women. It not only harms those women, it also harms all the women around them and it.

To be fair I can't get too worked up about this sort of thing. It's the same as when sex robots become realistic and affordable. It doesn't really matter what men do to algorithms and electronics. All that counts is how they behave with real people.

No doubt someone will say "but what about it normalising abuse" or something like that. To me, it isn't. People treat electronics and such in a way they wouldn't treat a human all the time. I swear at my PC in a way I wouldn't if it were a person doing the work for me. I have smacked a TV to get a better picture (old CRT type, not an expensive modern one). It's not the same thing as being abusive to a person.

As a microcosm is pretty revolting though.

I mean it's concerning that abuse is continuing to rise (might it mean that more people ate reporting? Hopefully?) But I think its a little reductive to say chatbots are a major factor. Of course its revolting.

Part of the problem I guess is that sad, strange little men who would not have a huge network before reddit/the Internet. Now its easy for them to fine others with similar views which creates these awful echo Chambers.

Replika is meant for mentoring, friendships and relationships, so The Sun got that wrong. There is a setting you can have that sets the AI to respond as if you were in a relationship, and yep, it can be a sexual one.

Many users do say shitty things to their Replika and share the resulting chat online but it is done as a way to see how AI responds (from the stuff posted in communities that I have seen anyway). Other times people test the AI with harmless things too, such as seeing how they cope with counting down from 10, or naming things with the letters of the alphabet.

Yep, I’ve also read articles about this.

The robots were cut and burned, limbs torn off, etc.

This is about real women, but this also reminded me when I read about strip club that allows ”tipping” with coins and men would heat them up with lighters, throw them at women and laugh when the coins would burn the stripper.
