AIBU to think this is not excessive noise?

My upstairs neighbour came down yesterday to yell at me about excessive noise that I was currently making. It was 1pm, and I was hoovering. It’s a normal household hoover. I might have hoovered for a bit longer as I was trying (and failing) to get all the pine needles from the tree up. I admit it makes a noise, but surely lunchtime on a Saturday is a perfectly acceptable time to hear hoovering noise.

I did check that that was the noise that she was complaining about, it was. She does not have children trying to sleep.

If its a one off I'd just think she was hungover/ having a bad day.

I think you know that it’s not unreasonable to hoover in the middle of the day.

Is there more of a back story of bad feeling between you too? If not then your neighbour is just being weird.

No one with any sense is going to say you're unreasonable! Even if she worked nights and had to sleep in the day (as I do) there is no excuse for yelling at you. What did you say?

She’s mental, and if she complains again about daytime household hussle and bussle I would suggest flat living isn’t for her.

I can't think of a much more reasonable noise at a reasonable time!

Of course YANBU. Did you ask her what she considers to be a reasonable time to do it?

Yanbu for that particular noise, but neighbours rarely complain on a "first offence". Have you possibly been noisy at other times as well?

I had a neighbour like this. She tried to tell me I could only vacuum in a 2 hour window once a week. It became a bit of a feud (entertainment over lockdowns).
