I've probably been really stupid so I have my hard hat on.
I'm selling something on Facebook marketplace and somebody messaged asking how much with postage she then said I will pay by PayPal can I have your email.
I gave my email I then gets a message from her saying I need to make sure I am sending to correct person cam you give me the code you just received so I stupidly gave her 2 codes then I had a email saying I had changed my paypal password I then got suspicious and told her I wasn't proceeding and will be reporting her. Has anybody come across anything similar.

Can't say for definite but the fact she asked for your one time pass code makes it very, very likely. Id probably contact your bank and advise them just so there's a note on your account. Changing your passwords was a sensible move.

tectonicplates · 15/01/2022 22:30

Yes that's a scam. Don't give those codes out to other people in future!

Ikona · 15/01/2022 22:33

When you reset your password on PayPal, it sends a code to your mobile to verify it's you - she has done this, and you've given her the code to allow her to change your password. It's a very common scam, but not at all your fault that it's happened.
You need to change your PayPal password now, as well as any other accounts which use the same email address/password combination. Also keep an eye on your PayPal and bank accounts for a while and report any unauthorised transactions immediately.

Dalooah · 15/01/2022 22:34

The messages come with a warning not to share the code with anyone- they're not joking when they say that! Glad to hear you cottoned on quickly and changed your passwords!

Ikona · 15/01/2022 22:35

Sorry you have changed your PayPal password, but please do the same for any other accounts that may have the same password, as a precaution.

Lexie365 · 15/01/2022 22:36

Hi, yes tbh it does sound like she tried to hack your PayPal. luckily you changed your password now, hopefully that will be the end of it.

Yes that is a scam! Doesn't the text say something like don't share this code with anyone? My PayPal genuinely got hacked before and idk how as I am very vigilant about this stuff and didn't share anything with anyone, have different passwords for things etc. Something like £2.5k stolen and it was on foreign websites and PayPal did nothing about it, didn't even notify me. It was my bank that sorted it out and I got a refund. I found PayPal absolutely useless and their customer service was appalling, they kept logging it as goods not received because I didn't get the goods. Of course I didn't get the goods because why would someone hack my PayPal to send stuff to my address?

Looks like she's doctored a page, or used a screenshot someone else has made up. The grammar is too bad to be PayPal, should be "seller's", and either a comma or full stop after "phone", but it's a long run-on sentence instead. PayPal don't have any sort of system like this to verify sellers to buyers, they have their buyer protection in place when a purchase is made, but not any sort of codes sent to mobiles.
