Argh some cyclists

I want to start by saying this is not a bashing thread about cyclists and I am a cyclists myself and sometimes cycle to work but the majority of my cycling is for fun at the weekends etc...

What my annoyance is about is cyclists without lights on and wearing dark clothing. WHY?! please someone tell me if you do this why? And does it annoy anyone else?
It's honestly so hard to see them until much closer. It gets dark early these days so traffic is heavy during dark hours. If I knocked one over, it'd be my fault and I'd have to live with that on my conscious forever.

Please get some lights and reflective clothing.

Driver and cyclist here. I think you’re blowing this out of proportion imo. I see very few cyclists like this, way less than 1 in 10 I’d say.

Round by me everyone is legal apart from the odd gang of teenage boys.

On visits to Liverpool however the Deliveroo and JustEats riders are unlit kamikaze lunatics.

What's a MAMIL??

Landof · 14/01/2022 21:05

@Momicrone

Why do some drivers not indicate? It costs literally nothing. Why do some pedestrians step into the road looking at their phones with headphones on? Why are there any dangerous behaviours on the road? Where do we stop?
If you'd like to start a thread about those things, go ahead. But this thread is specifically about no lights on bikes.

I'm out now. Can see I'm not unreasonable (95%) 🤣
I'm nor going to lose sleep over it. But didn't wish to be accused of cyclist bashing. If you think I am, then I'm bashing myself too 😁

Landof, because I don't see the point in starting a thread bashing a small minority

I just wonder if their life is so bad a stay in hospital would be welcomed. They don't have bells either. I'm amazed there aren't more accidents.

On my way home from work at 5:30 it's already dark. I sometimes see this guy riding a bike. He wears dark clothing and has a very young child in a seat behind him and he has no lights on his bike (riding on the road). I despair at how incredibly stupid he is putting his child's life at risk like this.

ditalini · 14/01/2022 22:01

I was just thinking this when I was out picking up ds.

I do drive extremely carefully as this is a busy area at this time of the evening with lots of pedestrians nipping across the road, often with a few pints in them, and Deliveroo cyclists with no lights weaving in and out.

I was wondering if a campaign with on the spot fines for cyclists with no lights after dusk which took the form of a cost-price set of lights that would be fitted for them at the time might raise awareness.

Momicrone · 14/01/2022 22:02

Yes that is risky, but I'm not mad keen on bombing down a motorway at 80 Mile's an hour with kids in the back but it's a risk people take for granted

RantyAunty · 14/01/2022 22:23

I will slow down and mention how difficult they are to see and suggest hi viz and lights so they don't end up road kill.

It's not too much to ask to slip on a proviz jacket/vest and some lights.

VenusMantrap · 14/01/2022 22:25

I rarely see cyclists without lights, but when I do they are usually they are in cities/built up area where street lights should be sufficient for drivers to see them just as easily as they would see any unlit pedestrians or parked cars etc.

Any local fb group will show you exactly the amount of vitriol directed towards people who simply want to get around in a bike, and this thread is just victim blaming. The vast majority of cyclists hit/killed by drivers happens during daylight hours and is usually due to driver inattention/using a phone/deliberate close pass.

Having “95%” tell you YANBU…?
Shouldn’t be a shock that a majority group agree with the majority view. 🤷‍♀️

Totally get what your saying, we even have Uber Eats riders using eScooters in Highgate to deliver now, totally illegally, coming back from my school run this one came crashing through my daughters school freinds on the pavement knocking 2 of them flying into the road, to me this is not sustainable, what do you think:
