I'VE QUIT MY JOB

Yesterday I quit my job in childcare. I felt that the care of the children was being compromised by various elements eg child to adult ratios not being met, no hot water for hand washing and cleaning. I have also had enough of the constant bugs and illnesses being picked up as a result of children being sent in who are poorly.
I have recently had a few racially abusive comments made towards me as well and I'm at the point where I don't even feel that I can work my notice in this work place. WIBU nreasonable to leave with immediate effect? I am currently on a week's annual leave.

Well done, it sounds awful. Something else will turn up. If you're not away, you could spend some time job hunting. Good luck.

Are you Black?

I won't say yabu because you are not but can you explain a bit more please?

SlashBeef · 13/01/2022 11:49

Yanbu I'd have been out of there after the first racist comment.

Campervanlife4me · 13/01/2022 11:56

No, I'm white British but speak with a different accent and have had comments such as "can't understand a word you're saying" and "all these foreigners" etc. This has happened on 4 occasions, each time I have pointed out that its racist and unprofessional, all.of these comments are made in front of the children. That is my biggest problem. I'm very thick skinned and don't get upset by it but I certainly do not want the children in our care to be exposed to this kind of behaviour. It's always said in a joking manner as well.

I've already been offered 2 other jobs since yesterday.

In that sector, your next employer may require a reference from your previous employer, so breaking contract is not ideal.
Do make sure the racism is logged. Consider reporting the ratio issues to Ofsted. If you are in a union, take their advice.

ZoeTheThornyDevil · 13/01/2022 12:01

Strictly speaking the comments are xenophobic rather than racist, although still unacceptable. Although unless the comments were from other staff (they sound like they're from parents?) you are BU a little.

You are unlikely to face any immediate practical consequences if you don't work your notice but you will probably trash your reference from this job, so it's up to you to gauge whether you care about that.

Campervanlife4me · 13/01/2022 19:08

The comments were from other colleagues. I've had 2 job offers today thankfully.

Well done

Campervanlife4me · 13/01/2022 22:00

@HandlebarLadyTash thank you. It's a worrying time but I have to stand up for what I believe in.

If child to adult ratios aren’t being met can I suggest you report them for the safety of all concerned. The children are being put at risk here.

I am so relieved! Talked to my manager today and she is happy to release me from working notice next Friday instead of having to work a month's notice, therefore allowing me to start my new job.
