Me and husband did a small shop today. We went to Aldi. I like Aldi for many reasons. It has great choice and value.

Came home and told mother in law where we had been she said why did you to there I don't like eating s**t food.

He idea of good food is shopping at waitrose. Its nice but expensive. I know we can get the same quality and value of food from aldi and save a little to.

If I am honest a carrot is a carrot wherever you buy it.

Is she wrong to say that the food in shops such as aldi and Lidl are s*t?

Your mil sounds uncouth. Do you live with her?
gobbledygoook · 13/01/2022 11:23

I think your MIL is rude, but not wrong - it's just a personal opinion.

I'm fully team Waitrose fwiw (and local butchers / greengrocers!) - our local Aldi / lidl are absolutely shocking quality, veg especially goes off really quickly and the meat is suspicious a lot of the time.

I'd be moving away from her. Rude woman.

Bubblesandsqueak1 · 13/01/2022 11:38

Hmm I find at least half of the food i have tried at aldi is crap but same for most stores i do half shopping there on stuff we like then the rest at sainsbury's or morrisons ect

GnomeDePlume · 13/01/2022 11:44

Buy bags for life from Waitrose and use them in whichever supermarket suits you. Dont tell DMiL where shopping has come from.

Elodeastar · 13/01/2022 11:45

Some people buy into named brands being superior - across the supermarket ranges, it's very often not true at all, of course you have to compare like with like, so chicken breast from butcher, Aldi/Lidl, Morrisons/Tesco/Asda, M and S/Waitrose, not chicken breast from one and nuggets from another (even if one sells more nuggets than the other). We don't have Aldi where I live (we'd have to get on a boat and drive a fair bit) but we do have Lidl and a lot of their things are cheaper and better quality than Tesco (we also don't have other large chain supermarkets). I also like how Lidl have ranges from different countries, and the no frills approach.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 13/01/2022 11:51

She’s talking bollocks. You have to shop around to find some amazing stuff. Sure Waitrose and M&S food is a bit nicer but a lot of the time cheaper shops are just as good or even better. Iceland £3 frozen paella is better than the Waitrose or M&S fresh ones and much cheaper. Your MIL is a snob and while living with you is welcome to shop herself.

BasketBlocks · 13/01/2022 11:54

Of course she’s wrong. I’m more concerned that you let her speak to you like that - she’d be getting a short, sharp response and possibly a kick up the arse on her way to the door.
