BBC constantly advertising ITV Programmes

Why do the BBC keep advertising ITV programmes makes no sense?

Its like Sainsburys advertising Tescos or similar!
This morning on Breakfast news the Beeb gave a large amount of time to advertising a programme on ITV tonight including trailers etc.

Dont they want people to watch their own channel? What have they got on at that time then? Surely they should be advertising that.

Makes no sense does anyone know why you would advertise the oppostion and encourage people to watch another Channel. Happens alot.

Many people don't just want to watch one channel so often they just have actors/presenters/sections about other popular programmes to compete with similar "infotainment" on the other side.

?

Sorry dont understand that.

Why are the Beeb advertising an ITV programme?

They're not "advertising" it. They're providing information. Whether that information is worthwhile or the sort of thing the BBC should be doing is another question altogether.

It's a technical difference in terminology that allows broadcasters who can't allow advertising to get around that restriction. For example an advert might say "The new Range Rover is the best car for today's busy woman." That's an advert. The BBC could do a feature on Range Rovers and say give factual information like "you could fit a fucking horse in there" or "it does 0-60 in 4 seconds." That'd be information, not an advert, even though it's singing the praises of a product that's not related to the BBC.

They collaborate on some programmes.

Sportslady44 · 12/01/2022 15:38

They clearly do advertise ITV programmes.

Big piece on something thats on ITV tonight complete with trailers was on Breakfast BBC TV today.

Shouldnt they be showing that they have got on at that time?

Surely it's the same as the BBC giving coverage to the new Adele album or the Spiderman film, both of which was rammed down our throats?

It's stuff happening in the world of entertainment.

ErrolTheDragon · 12/01/2022 15:42

Good, our public service broadcaster should be providing unbiased information. If they cover TV programmes within one of their shows then they certainly shouldn't just cover BBC output.

The space between shows, OTOH, is where they can legitimately promote their own shows.

fdgdfgdfgdfg · 12/01/2022 15:57

It's just cross promotion. BBC will have people on from ITV and Channel 4 and vice versa.

I don't watch a lot of ITV so can't give an example from there, but The Last Leg on Channel 4 for instance often has celebs and dancers from Strictly. They'll talk about Strictly, show clips from Strictly etc. BBC gets a nice plug and Channel 4 gets content and viewers, so it benefits both.

If the BBC suddenly went "We're not having anyone plugging anything from ITV on The Graham Norton Show" then ITV will retaliate and put the same rules in place. Both parties lose out both because there's now a smaller pool of of guests for their shows, and they can't promote their own stuff on their rivals channel.

Its not like Samsung putting out an advert saying "Buy an iPhone". People generally only need one phone. Loads of people watch both Strictly and The Last Leg

I saw film clips on the Graham Norton show which aren't even shown on any TV channel! The outrage! Why are the BBC encouraging us to turn the TV off and go to a cinema when they should be showing us nothing but Bargain Hunt and Doctor Who?!

Seriously OP, don't be silly.

Sportslady44 · 12/01/2022 20:26

Why do they have battle of the ratings then if they aren't interested in getting people to watch their
