to have booked a holiday abroad in August?

I always get itchy feet in January and it's a good time to book but I've just gone and done it despite having avoided foreign travel while the pandemic has been going on. Could someone reassure me that it wasn't a completely stupid thing to do? We're going to a Greek Island (I love Greece) at the end of August. It'll all be much better by then, won't it? WON'T IT????

OP posts:

Yes. It will. We went to the Canary Islands last year and it was fine, 100% glad I booked we had a lovely holiday. And holiday companies will let you rebook off you can’t travel due to covid, so don’t stress. I’m jealous, haven’t booked ours this year yet!

LosingTheWill2 · 10/01/2022 20:00

I’ve booked to go away in may 🤞

blametheparents · 10/01/2022 20:01

I’ve booked Greece for August too. Can’t wait!

LawnFever · 10/01/2022 20:01

We’ve got a holiday to a Greek island booked in Sep, I can’t bloody wait & I refuse to even consider it not happening Smile

Tal45 · 10/01/2022 20:02

We've been abroad 4 times since the pandemic started. The biggest hassle is the testing but it's so worth it when you get there.

Itwasgoodwhileitlasted · 10/01/2022 20:02

We are going to canaries in April. I've made a packing list tonight Blush

wonderstuff · 10/01/2022 20:03

Absolutely, people are travelling already, I’m very optimistic about the 2 weeks in Florida booked for Easter.

I would ensure you travel insurance you are happy with and that there’s solid cancellation policies should the worst happen.

Quail15 · 10/01/2022 20:04

Similar to PP - I have Spain booked for July and I went to Tenerife last summer. No issues with travelling last year, just had to book the pre flight and return tests, so I'm not worried about this year. im hoping it might be slightly easier with less testing.

Blossomtoes · 10/01/2022 20:05

We’ve booked a Mediterranean holiday in May. It’ll be fine.

Porthia · 10/01/2022 20:06

I feel the same OP and just booked Tenerife in the spring. Slightly terrified as we haven’t been abroad since 2019 and it was a bit of a moment of madness (crazily expensive too) but I felt like I needed some sunshine on the horizon! Fingers crossed!!

wineandchocolateforthewin · 10/01/2022 20:09

I've booked the Canaries for Easter, booking long haul for August and Greece for Oct. I'm being positive Grin

Sciurus83 · 10/01/2022 20:12

Going to book Portugal for their late Spring, plenty of people travelling now it'll be reet

NightLight2 · 10/01/2022 20:14

I’m thinking about Bali or Vietnam in July but those countries aren’t even open yet

We ended up losing a fair amount of money (to us) when we attempted to book the same holiday to Madeira three times last year; while the hotel was fine about rearranging, we had to pay again for the EasyJet flights (that was the carrier the package company was using) every time. The ironic thing is that we'd chosen Madeira as it had one of the safest entry systems in the world (barring, you know, New Zealand) at the time, but our government decided to impose Lockdown. (The holiday before that had been booked with Thomas Cook, so we're understandably a bit wary of even attempting to go overseas at the moment!.) There's absolutely no way we could afford an additional unexpected £2K or whatever it is now to quarantine, possibly at both ends, so for now, foreign travel is out for us. (And we used to love travelling.)

So this year we'll only be travelling within the UK (more probably England only). Even when we visited family in the north before Christmas I was so paranoid about BJ and chums slapping another Lockdown in place I took out travel insurance for us within the UK, which is not something I've ever felt the need to do before. Thing is, most insurances won't cover you if governments decide they're going to enact Lockdowns, although they might cover you if you have to cancel due to Covid. Then there's the cost of all the testing, as the NHS tests (that we do very regularly in this house due to work) aren't accepted as valid for non-work-related travel...

Hasn't stopped me looking longingly at brochures, travel agent windows, and websites, though, or my guilty pleasure TV watch of Death in Paradise!

Ithinktomyself · 10/01/2022 20:26

Oh God I love you lot. Thank you. I actually felt quite sick tbh. We've barely left the house over the last two years. Managed a few days away in Wales in October but that's it. I just desperately need something to look forward to and something that promises a return to normality. Off to sort out insurance and dog care now!

Pedalpushers · 10/01/2022 20:28

I've been abroad 3 times in the last 6 months, including over Christmas with omicron doing its worst! Have another trip planned for early May.

Lightswitch123 · 10/01/2022 20:30

Is this serious? It's already better now. Get on with your life. Go tomorrow! . No need to keep wetting the bed Grin

Jazzyjeffery · 10/01/2022 20:32

We went abroad last August. If we could manage it then, then I'm sure you'll be fine this year. Enjoy

Tay17 · 10/01/2022 20:33

We visited Greece in 2020 & 2021!
Don’t panic, you’ll have an amazing time & what a lovely holiday to look forward to ☀️

Firesidefox · 10/01/2022 20:33

I have too!

AnyFucker · 10/01/2022 20:34

Go, go, go

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 10/01/2022 20:36

We went away over Christmas. Make sure there's a decent Covid cancellation policy, have insurance covering isolating abroad, put money aside for testing just in case that all changes again.

cptartapp · 10/01/2022 20:48

We've had Greece booked since August 2020. It's been moved three times due to Covid.
We are going this year come hell or high water.
Malaga too next month.

coogee · 10/01/2022 20:58

We are booked to go abroad in August. We went abroad last August, and the August before that.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 10/01/2022 21:04

I think it will be fine. I'm booked for May.
