Fat shaming on The Chase

PolkaDot456 · 10/01/2022 17:06

Everyday yhat I catch the intros, Mark Labette is usually the butt of a fat joke. AIBU to think this must fuel bullying in schools as the jokes are easy for kids to remember and repeat at their peers?!

He makes comments about all of them - there's also boring and frosty knickers

And it's for The Beast, it's alongside immense brain

Chikapu · 10/01/2022 17:11

Do many kids watch The Chase? I wouldn't have thought they were the target audience.

Georgeskitchen · 10/01/2022 17:12

Kids don't need too much prompting to name call. It's been going on since kids were invented

DiddyHeck · 10/01/2022 17:16

Kids don't need to watch the Chase to remember how to tease people.

itwasntaparty · 10/01/2022 17:23

Do kids watch the Chase?

Me neither.
Prinnny · 10/01/2022 18:08

Might encourage them to lose some weight incase they ever go on the chase so they don’t get mocked by Bradders!

FriendshipsAreHardForMe · 10/01/2022 18:10

Maybe but I can't help but feel a bit meh about it.

We grew up with loads of insensitive content. I never bullied or called people names. I knew what was for the TV/comedy and what was real life.

I still laugh at Michael McIntyre even though his comedy often bases itself around gender stereotypes. It's funny.

CustardGoodJamGoodMeatGood · 10/01/2022 18:11

I don't think many kids would pay that much attention to the chase really and Labette is like La Bête which in French, translates to 'the beast'

onewednesdayindecember · 10/01/2022 18:15

My 6 year old loves the Chase! He hates the bits where the Chasers are rude to the contestants. I do think some of Bradley’s comments are a bit close to the bone sometimes

My 3 year old loves the Chase
santastolemycat · 10/01/2022 18:31

My two year old loves the chase! He like to pretend he’s the chaser by singing the entrance music and sitting on his little chair at the end

RedCandyApple · 10/01/2022 18:34

My kids love the chase too 😂

CuriousaboutSamphire · 10/01/2022 18:48

It's done by consent. The Chasers have been pummeled into those suits, that make up, those characters. It's their job, their on show characters and it's the humour they all signed up for. If you want to pick out the cringiest, listen to Sean Wallace getting panned.

You really don't have to work so hard to bland out society!

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 10/01/2022 18:51

Custard I never realised that and feel stupid now (since I have a degree in French...)

underneaththeash · 10/01/2022 18:56

Fat shaming is not a thing. Being fat is not a positive at all.

Really? Hmm They also get at Ann. It's not great. I think they've crossed the line from 'bantz' which is frosty knickers etc, into the fat-shaming stuff.
PurpleRainlnTheSky · 10/01/2022 19:13

Hmmm, YANBU, but Mark himself makes jokes about pie/chocolate/cakes/general feasting. And as has been said, most kids don't watch The Chase anyway, and don't need to see it to be cruel, and to call people names.

Interesting though, how the 'fat' jokes are never aimed at Anne or Jenny, and they are overweight too, and they make food jokes. (Anne especially.) Jenny always has a comment about her being 'hot' suggesting she is sexy and very physically appealing. Whilst I don't think she is too bad looking, she is not 'hot' or sexy.

I am on the fence when it comes to Mark, but I do hate fat jokes, so I went with YANBU.

No one is saying it is a positive, I'm not sure where you get that from? So that makes anyone fair game then? No, it really doesn't. And fat-shaming really is a thing, unless you have been living under a rock for the last 20 yrs Hmm
SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 10/01/2022 19:17

I think some of the remarks that are near the bone are strongly suggesting that Anne is unattractive (unstated directly, but implied that it's because she is overweight). So, often they don't quite get there, but it follows the general society view that overweight = unattractive.

somewhereoverthechipshop · 10/01/2022 19:22

Sorry but I think there are more important things in the world to worry about. Haven’t noticed anything that rude.
