Impulse bought some today. Love pickles, love walnuts what could go wrong?….. they are GRIM. Any suggestions of ways to make them palatable or maybe even how to use them as a household cleaner!!!

I think they're delicious with cold meat & a blob of mayonnaise Smile

Inextremis · 10/01/2022 13:06

They are my favourite pickle :) Nothing like unpickled walnuts though, are they? There are some recipes out there which incorporate them - although if you hate them I'm not sure they'll be palatable even in a cooked dish - but if you fancy it, here's one to try: www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/highland-beef-pickled-walnuts-puff-pastry-tops

BarbaraofSeville · 10/01/2022 13:06

Give them to the person on the latest 'Aldi is shit' thread who cited lack of availability of pickled walnuts as a reason why they were unable to shop there 'because they don't sell everything they need and they'd have to adjust their menu plan'.

GettingStuffed · 10/01/2022 13:06

Add them to a stew, there's a recipe in Delia's Christmas book

ShirleyPhallus · 10/01/2022 13:06

Someone on another thread this week had the same dilemma and googled good recipes and had a delicious sounding beef dish. AS “walnuts” from this week and it should come up on the thread about Aldi

Sliced with cheese and biscuits. I few grains of salt helps too. How can you not like them? A fairly expensive treat that DH and I can nearly come to blows over.

Battybonkers · 10/01/2022 13:11

Currently ruining some perfectly good cheese and crackers with them: can’t see salt helping TBH. All you walnut lovers are mad - next time I’m sticking to my standard silver skins.
I’m wondering if I put them in the toilet cistern if they’ll work like a bloo tablet.

I love walnuts. I love pickles. I was so excited to try them but seriously let down. They just arent nice

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 10/01/2022 13:14

I bought some for the first time this year and 😱 I love vinegar and pickles in general, but these are like being waterboarded by vinegar.

Boogaloony · 10/01/2022 13:18

I'm a massive cheese and pickle fan, I've tried loads of pickles and fermented foods. This was December gone I tried my first ever pickled walnuts. I have no idea what I was expecting but they look like tiny zombie rat brains and they taste like that rat has been sewn into in a dead hobos ballsack and left to fester under ground for a year.

No Thanks.

JangolinaPitt · 10/01/2022 13:30

Love them with cheese. Where did you buy them?

Time40 · 10/01/2022 13:34

Put them in a casserole. They are brilliant with venison, but if you can't find any, they are also very good with beef. Lots of red wine in the casserole makes it even better!

Battybonkers · 10/01/2022 13:53

@JangolinaPitt they were the Opies ones.
@Boogaloony I’ve never seen a zombie rat brain but if I ever do I expect it will look a lot like a pickled walnut!

OP posts:
Battybonkers · 10/01/2022 13:54

@Time40 thanks for the suggestion - I’m veggie so I’ll leave out the venison, and don’t want to ruin a good red wine with the walnuts so I shall serve a large bottle of red wine for dinner and will tell DH it was a recipe I got off of mumsnet 😂

Ha ha! I was the same.. Saw them mentioned on a Christmas thread and thought Ooh..

For some reason I thought they would resemble their pre-pickled shape and be hard?! But they're soggy and weird and bleurgh. Ours went in the bin Blush

Thanks for posting this OP, was contemplating adding some to my next online shop. Don’t think I’ll bother now after reading Boogaloonys vivid description!!

MsAgnesDiPesto · 10/01/2022 14:24

DFIL, who is a man of otherwise unadventurous tastes, loves the things,, so we get him some for Christmas each year. I have never been tempted even to try one. They look like an experiment 🤮

Hohofortherobbers · 10/01/2022 14:27

I have a similar issue with a jar of preserved lemons. A restaurant I go to adds slivers of them to this amazing salad so I thought I'd do the same. Oh my, they are foul! Taste like how I'd imagine the gel inside an airfreshener would!!

itwasntaparty · 10/01/2022 14:27

Give them away! They are vile little mini brains and I love pickles.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 10/01/2022 14:28

I love them so much. Please send them to me. I mainly have them on cheese and crackers.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 10/01/2022 14:30

Recipes are usually stuff like this
www.sainsburysmagazine.co.uk/recipes/mains/beef-and-ale-pie-with-pickled-walnuts
Which would presumably then taste like it had pickled walnuts in it.
And is not vegetarian.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 10/01/2022 14:31

You could probably put them on Olio and someone would collect them

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 10/01/2022 14:45

I was thinking of advertising mine on a masochists' forum.
SuperLoudPoppingAction · 10/01/2022 14:46

It is such an old-fashioned kind of food. My grandad used to buy them around Christmas time.
They're gorgeous.

Martinisarebetterdirty · 10/01/2022 18:26

A bit left field (and outing as so weird) but my mum has them on cream crackers with ketchup - I only go near them in a casserole.
