To think this was all for nothing ?

Joined a temp agency. I am about 2 hours away from it's headquarters but they assured me I would not need to travel there. I am a non driver. They said they would not ask me to travel far.
So far, all the roles that have come up have been at least 1 hr 15 with multiple buses and walks to areas I am not that familiar with yet would be expected to start at 8AM. My consultant said he would 'work on shifts for the days I know you can do' but he can't magic up what isn't there. I spent hours filling out the forms and signed a contract but now thinking that it was all a waste of time. Feel so fed up.

YANBU it was all for nothing

LawnFever · 09/01/2022 23:03

Can’t you signup with another agency closer to you? If their office is that far from you I wouldn’t expect them to have that many roles come up in your area tbh.

What other agencies are closer to you? You can contact them this week and get on their books as well.

Skiptheheartsandflowers · 09/01/2022 23:06

Have you signed up with other agencies too? I used to be contracted to about three to increase my chances of picking up work.

That's normal for a working person though. Are your expectations realistic?

TheGoldenWolfFleece · 09/01/2022 23:18

Why did you join an agency so far away? They're usually local jobs aren't they?

use257 · 09/01/2022 23:20

I have always travelled 1 hr + on public transport for work so it's not that unreasonable for them to expect that.

LawnFever · 09/01/2022 23:25

It takes me an hour on public transport to get into the city centre of where I live so really that’s a pretty normal commute.

betwixtlives · 09/01/2022 23:26

That’s a normal commute though? What were you expecting?

PurpleRainlnTheSky · 09/01/2022 23:28

Yep YANBU it was all for nothing.

Unfortunately, you are never going to be useful as a temp if you can't drive/haven't got a car. It's a non-starter to be honest.

HeddaGarbled · 09/01/2022 23:32

I spent hours filling out the forms

That’s the nature of job-hunting, I’m afraid. If you weren’t doing it through an agency, you’d be doing this for every single job.

Hyppogriff · 09/01/2022 23:35

Sounds kind of normal to me. And it’s not like you’ve put yourself to a great deal of trouble thus far to warrant this ??

MarieKlepto · 10/01/2022 00:03

To be absolutely honest with you 1hr 15mins commute each way is actually pretty good for so many people. I live in the west of a city and was interviewing for a company in the east (it's a reasonably small city compared to the likes of London). Did a trial public transport run: 2 hours each way. Driving would have only have knocked off about 15 mins due to the bus lane restrictions at commuting hours. The trial run was to familiarise myself, the commuting time didn't put me off. Unfortunately didn't get the job.
