Listed a fairly expensive item on Facebook marketplace a couple of days ago. It's quite niche so I didn't expect it to see them to be honest. It's also on eBay/Vinted etc.

I've had a message in the night from someone saying they want to but it but they're busy with work so will send "a UPS mailman with cash for me and to collect the item". It reeks of a scam so I'll be ignoring as it's not worth the risk. AIBU? I can't quite decide what the scam is - fake cash?

Yes it’s a pretty common scam

UPS drivers won’t bring cash, for starters

It's a scam.

We had loads of them when selling our kitchen.

Scam. They are banking on you wanting the money. Tell them it's PayPal or nothing

frazzledasarock · 07/01/2022 07:02

If you ask for money by PayPal send the item recorded delivery do not let them pick up in person as I’ve seen scams where the person claims item was never received and opens a dispute on PayPal and seller has no ‘proof’ of despatch.

So either cash on pick up or PayPal and recorded delivery/proof of postage.

Thanks - I realised this morning there are loads of loopholes like this. I'd definitely make sure I have proof it has been received.

How does the scam work though? If someone turned up with cash you could just give them the item. Or are they trying to get you to post it and the ups guy is supposed to turn up separately with the cash?

Theunamedcat · 07/01/2022 12:00

Friends and family paypal there is no refund then

IncompleteSenten · 07/01/2022 12:03

What's the scam if they pay cash and you make the collecting person sign a receipt or something or take a photo or video of them?
