Sainsburys macaroni

I was just idling in the kitchen and a packet of Sainsburys macaroni pasta I used earlier caught my eye. It says on the back:

"Perfect for sweet or savoury dishes, the smooth sides and hollow centre of the tubes soak up the flavours. Great for baking too." Confused

Ummm....WTF Sainsburys. Are people really putting a layer of macaroni in their trifle or adding it to their victoria sponge mix nowadays???? Please tell me they aren't. I think I'd throw up if I fished out a piece of pasta in someone's tray bake. Bleurghhhhhh!

There's a pudding, like rice pudding or bread and butter pudding but with macaroni. It's a real thing!

So carbs + custard really.

HopingForMyRainbowBaby · 06/01/2022 14:55

All kinds of wrong!!

gobbynorthernbird · 06/01/2022 14:55

Italians have been making puddings with pasta for literally centuries. This makes you sound very ignorant.

Thesearmsofmine · 06/01/2022 14:58

Macaroni pudding is a thing.

Macaroni pudding is a thing, Sainsbury's's definitely didn't start it.

Malibuismysecrethome · 06/01/2022 15:01

The Greeks do a dish with macaroni and sometimes serve it cold. I think it can be sweet or savoury.

TheSpottedZebra · 06/01/2022 15:01

There's also a traditional Jewish version with vermicelli. Is it lokshen pudding?

So I guess any shape of pasta would be fine. Use fusilli if it makes you happier?

JellyfishandShells · 06/01/2022 15:01

My mother used to make a lovely sweet macaroni pudding decades ago. Similar to a proper rice pudding, very creamy.

MarshmallowFondant · 06/01/2022 15:02

Didn't Nigella do a chocolate lasagne?

OmgIThinkILikeYou · 06/01/2022 15:02

This remind me of a dimmer working in Hungary and ordering a savoury pasta dish for lunch which was served with icing sugar on top!

purplesequins · 06/01/2022 15:05

we used to have milk noodles as child.
just macaroni (or other pasta) cooked in milk with a few raisins and orange peel.

Blimey, are you having a bad day? No need to be rude Why don't you share your knowledge rather than demean someone?
Ajl46 · 06/01/2022 15:06

Did you never have macaroni pudding as part of your school dinners?!

AngusThermopyle · 06/01/2022 15:07

Macaroni pudding, like rice pudding, was a 1970's staple family dessert Grin

montysma1 · 06/01/2022 15:08

Get over yourself

gogohm · 06/01/2022 15:09

It's a bit like rice pudding but macaroni. It's real. You can even get it in cans

whywouldntyou · 06/01/2022 15:15

I LOVE macaroni pudding, (I am old) but using it in baking?? Can't imagine how that'd work... unless they mean baked macaroni pudding? I also love semolina, tapioca (frogspawn) and rice pudding.

Yes! I liked it Grin

When my grandma died in about 1973, we found a stash of milk puddings in her cupboard. These included tins of macaroni pudding. Like rice pudding but with macaroni. I have never eaten anything so revolting in my life.

Lokshen is technically the name of the vermicelli, the pudding is kugel but you can call it lokshen pudding.

There are lots of Italian sweet pasta dishes. I think Ocado sell the Pasta Evangelists' chocolate ravioli:

pastaevangelists.com/products/box/?vc=CIAO40&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIyLC8m7ed9QIVSOrtCh0mDw5xEAAYASAAEgL_cvD_BwE

What's not to like about chocolate and coffee ganache ravioli with a hazelnut crumb?

I think when they say "baking" though they mean in oven cooked pasta bakes rather than adding it to cakes...

eagerlywaitingfor · 06/01/2022 15:30

The packet literally says 'Perfect for sweet or savoury dishes', so that covers dessert puddings; and cooking a pudding is not baking.

So the OP is right to be puzzled.

GrandTheftWalrus · 06/01/2022 15:31

Was also coming to say I've seen tins of creamed macaroni in the supermarket.
