WIBU - Cats on Table

cuppaandabiscuit · 06/01/2022 14:03

I have 2 cats. They like to sleep on the dining table out of reach of the dog.
DP hates this and keeps complaining that it's unhygienic.
I feel that, as long as the table is cleaned properly before each use there's no problem.

WIBU?

(NB I've bought the cats hanging beds, cat trees etc and they still sleep on the table. Plus DP doesn't like them sleeping on sofa, beds or anywhere else really but the dog is encouraged onto sofa, beds etc. TBH DP doesn't really like the cats full stop. They've been mine for 10 years, DP been around for 8)

There's not much you can do to stop them. Ours go where they like, worktops, table etc. We always nudge them off (gently!) but it doesn't deter them. Plus we're not always home to stop them! No it's not particularly hygienic so I'm just really careful to clean surfaces before use.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 06/01/2022 16:04

My cat likes to sit on the table. I used to think it was something I wouldn't tolerate but it doesn't bother me now. I don't put up with her on the worktop though.

Freecuthbert · 06/01/2022 16:22

Unless you're eating straight off the table without plates, I don't see the issue. And cats do as they please anyway.

cuppaandabiscuit · 06/01/2022 16:39

Thank to. To keep him quiet I might get a cheapy throw for the table so cats aren't directly on it as a compromise. But I'm sure he'll find something else to moan about 🙄

If I was your cat I'd be over the moon! A nice comfy cosy table! Grin

BunsOfAnarchy · 06/01/2022 16:57

I hate cats. They are AWFUL.
However I have one and he is not only the biggest c**t on this planet, he is also the most Darlingest (yes its a word lol) most beautiful loving thing I have ever had in my presence.

I dont like him being on the counter tops but I know he fully holds a rave on there when I'm at work.

He wins. I just wipe everything down before I use it. God he's such a twat. But I love him so much I could cry.
-sincerely , cat mom

Cats can be arses Grin

steppemum · 06/01/2022 17:01

well my cat doesn't sleep go on the table or the kitchen surfaces.

But he is allowed up high on other things, the piano being his favourite, along with the tall chest of drawers in our bedroom. He is allowed on sofas and beds.
Oh and he loves window sills.

I think cats like to be up high, and usually hate beds on the floor. Life is easier if you creat a safe place for them to go.

But every cat we have ever had has been trained off the kitchen table and worksurfaces. I hate cats walking across the table - yuck.
(although - my mums' cats didn't go on the worksurfaces, but somehow they did sit on top of the fridge....)

Justheretoaskaquestion91 · 06/01/2022 17:52

I don't even clean the table after it's been catted... I'd pretend to a stranger that I do, but I definitely don't

Aaaaand that puts me off eating at the house of a cat owner! 🤢

DrManhattan · 06/01/2022 17:56

Totally gross

Mangozesty · 06/01/2022 17:58

You're not invited...you'd put my cats off their tea.

My cat sits in the middle of the table while we have tea, and we feed him bits of chicken off the sides of our plates. So far nobody has died.

MyTwoBengals · 06/01/2022 18:15

We wash our cats in the dishwasher so they are as clean as the plates

Just kidding -no cats were harmed in the taking of this photo - they are just two very determined animals who go anywhere they choose whenever they choose …

Wow they are beautiful cats 😍
Chely · 06/01/2022 18:18

He clearly just doesn't like the cats and is a dog person.
I don't like any animal on the furniture, our dog belongs on the dog shelf.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 06/01/2022 18:27

Out of the two, I can't help but think it isn't the cats who are known as a species to indulge in eating their own vomit and shit, along with rolling ecstatically in dead things and fox shit. But the species that does is the one he thinks is 'clean'?

MidnightMeltdown · 06/01/2022 18:36

My cats like to sit in the table but they aren't allowed!

When they were kittens I would say 'No!' and push them off when they got on the table. They now very rarely attempt to get on the table. On the odd occasion that they do, I say 'no' and they will quickly jump off. They know full well that they aren't allowed on there.

You just need to train them.

jamandmarmaladethesecondcoming · 06/01/2022 18:40

You need to put your DP out the catflap at night

BertieQueen · 06/01/2022 18:46

I do agree with your husband, but then I don’t like catsGrin

But then the dog should also not be allowed on the furniture either.

Our dog is not allowed on the sofa or beds.

AnnaBolina · 06/01/2022 18:49

Definitely a cat person vs dog person situation. I am happy with my cats on the sofa, they sleep on my bed in the day, except one who sleeps behind the kitchen tap and purrs at you when you go for water. The dog (a massive hairy GSD) is not allowed on the sofa, not allowed upstairs and definitely wouldn't be allowed to even attempt to get behind the kitchen tap. My reasoning being I've never had to give a cat a bath. Ever. They're always clean. The dog, I have to rinse about a pound of mud and grit and loose hair out of her every other week. Plus, I can't stand the smell of dogs. So she has her own bed in her favourite spot and free access to the garden at all hours. And that's my compromise. I didn't want a dog, my husband did. He'd have the dog sleep in between us on the bed. No sir, no fucking way.

PinkPomeranian · 06/01/2022 18:51

Our cat isn't (knowingly) allowed on our dining table or (very small) counter top, so I do see where your husband is coming from, but I think your suggestion of a throw is a great compromise.

PinkPomeranian · 06/01/2022 18:52

Can you get throws for the furniture the dogs lie on, too?!

quitefranklyabsurd · 06/01/2022 18:53

Our cats rule the roost. You don;t move them if they’re sleeping and the table is fine - especially if OH has been daft enough to leave a jumper there.

It’s also huge double standards from your OH if the dog is allowed to do things that the cats aren’t!

steppemum · 07/01/2022 12:14

I often move a sleeping cat.
Sometimes for no reason.

There is nothing better than scooping up and sleepy bundle and havign a sleepy cat cuddle. My fluff ball loves it and when I put him down he just curls up again purring
