Anyone else hate January?

Its such a depressing month after all the nice Christmas build up, cold dark mornings, nothing exciting going on, spring seems a long way off, money tight after Christmas.
My only saving grace is thanks to the pandemic I am working at home, so no going back to the office, always had that dread after the Christmas hols.

Happy birthday DinkBoo. Dh has a milestone one end of Jan, all plans in limbo at the moment. I wish I was a hedgehog and could curl up until Easter.

I always hated Jan/Feb because they were long/ dark/ cold and the end of Christmas feels sad.

I've mentally reframed them after having a child born in jan. They are months of quiet, comfort, new beginnings. It's fine to get in your pjs and dressing gown at 5pm and stay in and watch a film or read a book. Crisp cold winter day walks - I've forced myself out on them!

I also think getting the lighting right in your house is important in winter. Lamps with warm colour lights rather than using the main room lights have made a big difference to me.

Im wishing we would get a shed load of snow as it would at least brighten the land up

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 05/01/2022 18:31

Some times I hate it. But I don’t hate it too much this year!

Just feel like I want to get on with life after Xmas. Non rainy weather tends to help as you can get outdoors and do stuff.

@DinkBoo Happy Birthday! Cake I feel your pain re: January birthdays. I've given up trying to do something big or special for mine because none of my friends ever feel like going out and quite frankly neither do I.

OhLordyWhatNow · 05/01/2022 18:38

@cptartapp

Yes always. It's my birthday at the weekend. A milestone one too. Not feeling it at all.

@cptartapp

Sympathies. My birthday is this weekend too, it's rubbish isn't it.

I love it! Like previous posters. I enjoy the quiet nature of the world and love going for walks / working in the garden as the first very tentative shoots of Spring get sprunging. I really dislike December and Christmas, so it’s a blessed peace for me after last month.

Add in more simple foods, early nights and good telly and I’m here for it!

Soon be Spring and then (fingers crossed!) a gorgeous, hot Summer!

Gonnagetgoing · 05/01/2022 19:20

Don’t hate January so much but finding it very hard to get back to and in work mode. Luckily I can coast for a couple of days.

Horst · 05/01/2022 19:53

See I get that it’s not lighter than before Christmas but it’s also so so much colder.

It’s the cold that does me in mostly. If it hadn’t of got even colder I could live with it.

January last year was fucking awful with lockdown so I'm going to embrace this January!

Yes, this! I used to dislike January, but after last January with home schooling and nothing indoors open, this January feels like bloody Mardi Gras! Grin

I enjoy watching the days gradually lengthening, rather than the knowledge that they're getting shorter and darker. I love knowing that spring - my favourite season - is around the corner and that longer, brighter days and birdsong will soon be returning.

Although I enjoy the winter break Christmas has never been the best time for me. There's no 'build up', it's all about work at one of my busiest times of the year, then with all the Christmas tasks crammed into a short space of time. It's very labour intensive even though we evenly split most tasks, and by the time the holidays arrive I'm usually exhausted.

November is the one month I can't bear. Lengthening darkness, solstice still far away, dank, grey weather and those perpetual twilight days where it never seems to get properly light. Ugh! Give me January any time.

andyjm · 11/01/2022 11:36

I hate January and February, i always have done for years not sure if i suffer from SAD because how different i feel when i see the blue sky and sun, seems to give me so much energy and positivity even in winter waking to a blue sky makes me feel so much better.. Once January is over February is a short month and i can then see spring in sight. I even cross days off on my calendar lol which helps psychologically i think. But yes i completely understand how you feel about January February 😭😁☹️

sasparilla1 · 11/01/2022 11:39

I hate January! I can't remember a time when I haven't.

Apart from the 1st, which is ds's birthday. But even that's difficult!

January for me is all about darkness without the fun and cheer of Christmas. It's dark, long nights and gloomy. I refuse point blank to make this month any more miserable by making New Year resolutions or doing dry January. It is the month that I make plans for the future, that tend to start in February!

Hemingwayscatz · 11/01/2022 11:45

I dislike it too. I think I’d feel better about it if someone’s birthday was in January but the next birthday in our house is mine in late Feb then DC1s 11 days later. I don’t mind February too much because it’s short and obviously my birthday towards the end. January is very long and just feels bleak and depressing. At least we aren’t in lockdown this year though, last January almost killed me off.

andyjm · 11/01/2022 12:03

Yes at least we aren't in lockdown 😁 and fingers crossed looking like we might be coming out of it on a permanent basis.

VelvetChairGirl · 11/01/2022 12:09

No I was born in it Cake

zafferana · 11/01/2022 12:11

Yes OP, I hate January with a passion! I was driving DS to school this morning through fog and drizzle with poor visibility and mud and grey everywhere and I just thought 'What a fucking depressing day it is!' My favourite month is June. January is the antithesis of June. Fuck off January!!
