MRSA?

Quick question before going to bed! Grin

I know that MRSA is Staphylococcus Aureus which is resistant to methicillin.

Is staphylococcus aureus which is resistant to penicillin the same as this? Is that MRSA too or is it just a different type of staphylococcal bacteria?

Sorry just getting a bit confused! I read some mixed things when I googled it so just wanted to check! Smile

Strictly speaking, penicillin is not one, but a group of antibiotics, however the antibiotic benzylpenicillin is often referred to as just ‘penicillin’. The genetic material that makes MRSA resistant to methicillin also provides resistance to benzylpenicillin. However, Staphylococcus can be resistant to benzylpenicillin, but sensitive to methicillin.
