I've been waiting for a tax rebate as I knew I'd overpaid in my new job in 2020-21

It kept saying that any tax rebate would be done by October 2021 and not to contact them.
Apparently 'if you're due any money we'll contact you'

Like fuck Angry I phoned today given that the next tax year is over in 3 months and guess what?

Oh yes you are due 4 figures, we'll issue a cheque this week

How are they allowed to sit on this money indefinitely?
I'm sure if I owed them that amount they'd be collecting quicker than 9 months

You may receive interest from them. I know my DH did when his payment on account was too much and they owed some back. No harm in asking?

They haven't got the man power and the man power they have is all yaken up with getting money that is due to them. Lockdown/furlough has cost them an absolute fortune and its all hands on deck to get every penny in that they can. Yesnits not right and they should have processed your refund in a timely manner but at the moment nothing is happening without a lot of chasing. You should get interest added on to your payment.

Because, like all government depts if you make a mistake it's your fault if they do it's also your fault. There's no ownership.
