Aibu to not like drag queens 2

Hello, in a previous AIBU I asked…
And why don’t I? To me there is something intimidating and scary in the make up, and harsh glamour, parodied until it’s ugly and I think, aggressive. I remember going to drag shows long again in the 90s and they seemed to be a bit of fun and almost innocent compared to whatever it is about ru Paul et al. Nothing wrong with a bit of dame Edna from what I remember as a kid. What’s the reasoning behind this new style I wonder, and aibu?

I expected to get slated, but I think we had a very enjoyable debate with good points made on both sides and some interesting side discussions. I don’t know if anyone would like to continue, but in case..here is a new thread.
And here is a link to the last one

Yabu to post this again to get more ridiculous posts on the matter

Drag related ignorance on MN is nothing new, it's tiring to see it keep cropping up with the same loosely veiled hatred coming out

mintbiscuit · 04/01/2022 10:20

Everything @SwimmingIntoMotherhood said!

SallyWD · 04/01/2022 10:24

I know people say it's misogynistic etc but I don't agree. The only reason I don't like them is just that I don't find it funny. That sort of innuendo laden humour is a bit dull to me. My friends are all really in to drag artists but when I watch stuff with them I find it boring (but not offensive to women).

Draggedalong1 · 04/01/2022 10:24

I think one thing that is interesting is that as drag is being shown on main stream tv, and not just nightclubs, our attitude to it will change and, presumably drag and what it stands/ stood for will change. I’m curious as to how, and why really.

YANBU.

I've long been uncomfortable with it, for the reasons you've already posted.

I don't think its ignorant to point out how thinly veiled misogyny is in the drag race.

Draggedalong1 · 04/01/2022 10:27

That’s ok , no need to join in! I’m sure this thread will burn out soon anyway, just a bit of decluttering the house conversation!

Although one poster seems fixated on the fact it's legal

This may be in reference to me. If so, the reason I seemed 'fixated' on it was because other posters kept trying to compare drag it to illegal things. Not comparable for me.

Also to the poster who keeps saying the poll shows most hate drag here... I adore drag but I voted YANBU as the op is not unreasonable for forming her own opinion and asking for others.

Another drag fan has said they've done the same thing . So the poll does not show that 80- something percent dislike drag at all.

Notimeforaname · 04/01/2022 10:48

And to those who think the op is being unreasonable for starting another thread, I'm sorry you're so bothered that others can and do speak freely, as much as they want.

Much like drag, you have the choice to tune in or not.

Great thread op Smile
Also, thanks for reminding me I must stop procrastinating and do my own New Years decluttering!!!Grin

Draggedalong1 · 04/01/2022 21:44

Notimeforaname you have made me laugh!
Thanks so much everyone for joining in - what a great conversation!
FWIW I was genuinely curious. I was brought up with ‘gentlemen that got married just like ladies, and gentlemen that like wearing dresses because they are so pretty! ‘ my dad hung out with derek jarman so nuff said. It just all seemed a bit more innocent and ‘arty’ then. Or maybe I was just young , this was back in the days of punk, jubilee and andrew Logan’s miss world. Very different times!

It’s more about transformation and they all look so sweet, I think. Now seems very different

So 86% of posters on the other thread agree with the op on this - it seems like a fair number of people don't like drag, and I presume that since the majority of posters here are women, one of the reasons for the dislike is the clear misogyny.

There seem to be a persistent minority who dismiss the 86%.

I know there is a lot of disagreement on the parallels with blackface, but I wonder if 86% of black people on a thread disagreed with something as being racist would others be so keen to dismiss it as "not a problem, feel free to ignore, it doesn't affect you".

TurquoiseBaubles · 04/01/2022 21:55

x-posted with Notimeforaname. I doubt the few drag supporters who voted YANBU would make much of a difference to the figures - over 1500 people voted.

Draggedalong1 · 04/01/2022 21:57

I love Ru Paul's Drag Race

The U.K. version is particularly entertaining. I don't find it aggressive at all, it makes me smile

Draggedalong1 · 04/01/2022 22:05

Actually those photos are pants. Ignore me!

Mybumlooksbig · 04/01/2022 23:30

Yanbu

We went to a well known drag bar and it was so cheap and tacky, and not funny in the slightest

Draggedalong1 · 12/01/2022 08:32

I guess that’s the thing, if it’s witty and clever or just relaying on fake bosoms !
