Cutting loose from family

Does anyone feel like cutting loose from family? It sounds harsh and extreme; I don't often see family as they are in relationships in their own homes in different parts of London. However, just come back from family dinner (rare that we see each other). Most of my family didn't bother sending me or my husband a card or present this year. They all work - but for me it's not about the expense or the size of the present but I bothered with everyone. Some of us got talking towards the end of the night - unfortunately ended in an argument and I abruptly left. Elderly aunt bizarrely seemed to lecture me in front of the rest saying some of us haven't got an income but you do as a journalist with your husband's wage. Never got a card or present from adult niece, nephew or older sister. I am unemployed. Other family members came to dinner who live in a different country. They spent all day on their mobile phones talking in Malaysian. Why is it that others can be rude and ignorant yet don't understand that you feel upset? I hate to say it but I have nothing in common with my family who appear to be out for themselves - thinking of severing ties as it's getting worse and I know longer enjoy their company.
