Is this an emergency?

Had issues with our boiler since it was installed. We rent. The boiler was installed by some guys, they failed to register the warranty, it started going off at random times. Nothing fixed it. Someone was meant to come in November from manufacturer and didn't. We had Covid so never got round to chasing it although agency were aware it still didn't work. Anyway from around 27th dec it's been making this horrid noise which has got worse and now it's not heating the radiators at all. Is this an emergency or should I wait until Tuesday?

Have you got hot water?

From a boiler point of view, if it's making noises & not giving you heat or hot water I would switch it off and call.

Ahhhhhbisto · 02/01/2022 16:24

Sorry, not sure if it is an emergency but have you tried adjusting the pressure on the boiler? Completely safe for you to do and a quick google of your boiler should explain how.

CloverField · 02/01/2022 16:25

I would ring the agency (they should have an out of hours number) as you shouldn't be without heating and hot water. An on call has engineer should at the very least give you a call.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 02/01/2022 16:25

It was coming out so hot it was scalding. It's just when it stopped working last time they told me to sit tight and wait until the morning. If tomorrow wasn't a bank holiday it wouldn't be so bad but I'm worried it is making it worse waiting. DH doesn't like to make a fuss- neither do I really

*gas

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 02/01/2022 16:28

It's now flashing an error message at me so I will call them. Thank you all Smile

Have you tried bleeding the radiators? I don’t know enough to say if it counts as an emergency.

Ohshittt · 02/01/2022 16:29

Really you are paying rent for a property with a working boiler, so to ring up and report it really isn't causing a problem. I am exactly the same as you though and hate bothering people! The sooner its reported the sooner it will be fixed, it will become a miserable start to January's with no heating or hot water and the weather being cold.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 02/01/2022 16:41

I called them and it's something to do with a pump and they agreed it is an emergency. Thank you everyone. It gave me the confidence to just call them

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 02/01/2022 17:11

@Ohshittt I'm not the only one then! Grin. It's silly really as we pay to rent a house with heating but I am the same at work as well lol. Don't like to ask for stuff

Did you have a proper manual left with the boiler.. Not actually to try and fix it yourself, but a manual can give you some idea what is causing any problems that you have noticed with the boiler..I managed to fix a little water pressure problem on my boiler a few weeks ago, by reading the boiler manual, I live alone, and always try and solve stuff initially.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 02/01/2022 18:01

I don't think we did. I've reported the code to the letting agency though and they've informed me it's a pump issue and beyond my remit. Thank you

I'm freezing now Sad

SurfWaves · 02/01/2022 19:55

They should send someone within 6 hours if it's dangerous ( ie you have no heating and it's freezing or a gas leak is immediate, everything else should be 24-48 hours.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 02/01/2022 21:24

They've told me someone will update me tomorrow. They are trying to get in touch with the landlord for his permission on what to do.

What constitutes as freezing? I think it's freezing now

@teaandtoastwithmarmite
I found this. hamiltonfraser.co.uk/knowledge/landlords-legal-boiler-heating-responsibilities/
"The minimum acceptable standards are to be able to maintain at least 18°C in sleeping rooms and 21°C in living rooms when the temperature outside is minus 1°C."
Can you borrow a/some space heater(s)?

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 03/01/2022 12:22

Thanks @Hydrate. Not heard anything from agency today. Thankfully it's mild for January. I've got one small heater. No hot water is minging though. Luckily we have a dishwasher and electric shower.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 03/01/2022 12:46

Chased them up. They are instructing someone to come out.

JurassicWorld · 03/01/2022 12:47

I'm sure an emergency issue like no hot water or heating should be fixed within 24 hours under the landlord/tenancy act and if it isn't for parts, etc then they should supply you with heaters.

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 03/01/2022 12:50

The godawful noise (like there's a banshee in the boiler?) and cold radiators often means that the system is low on water and the engineer needs to a) check for leaks, b) refill the system and c) bleed off any air once its fired up again.

Shouldn't take too long to sort if that is the case.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 03/01/2022 13:16

This was like a rumbling noise. I actually don't think anyone will come out today. I'm so fed up of renting. I appreciate it would be our expense but at least I could get it sorted.

OP posts:
teaandtoastwithmarmite · 03/01/2022 16:25

Yep no one has come out ffs

OP posts:
CorrBlimeyGG · 03/01/2022 16:28

What is the error code and the boiler manufacturer?

Look up boiler kettling. Is that the noise it is making?

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 03/01/2022 17:03

It's stopped rattling and stopped working altogether. I told the agency the code and they said it was a pump. It's like it was trying to heat up but couldn't and has now given up altogether. I tried to tell them ages ago it wasn't right. I know I'm being a pain but being cold makes me grumpy.
