GP Receptionist says to self certify for a month!!

Reposting for traffic:

GP receptionist has told my sister that the Doctor will not give her a fit note until she's self- certified her time off work for a month.

I've always known self-cert to be one week, sister's boss says the same and is expecting her to show up or book unpaid leave if Doctor won't sign her off.

Has anyone else heard of this?
Is it a covid related change or is receptionist stalling her?

New rules allow 28 days self cert.

Hospedia · 01/01/2022 09:46

Since 10th December you can self-cert for 28 days before needing a fit note.

Temporary rule until Jan 26th to allow GPs to focus on COVID boosters etc.

MsAgnesDiPesto · 01/01/2022 09:46

Yes, the rules have changed as part of the move to free up GPS and staff to deliver the booster programme. It was announced about a week ago.

For once GP receptionist is right. You can now self certify for 28 days

Welshgal85 · 01/01/2022 09:47

Yes it’s recently changed due to Covid but is temporary I think www.gov.uk/taking-sick-leave

SaskiaRembrandt · 01/01/2022 09:47

Yes it is 28 days at the moment www.gov.uk/taking-sick-leave

The law changed very recently (this month) from 1 week self-cert to 28 days. It’s a temporary measure to free up GP time to deal with COVID

Ooh wow, what a relief - she was steeling herself to lose her payAngry

Thank you to everyone who posted, I've sent her the link to show her boss and advised her to speak to HR too.

Its possible some employers don't yet know about the changes. You were right to query it though
