to do your own thing when you have guests staying for a few days? By this I mean take some time out, go for a lie down, read a book, maybe even watch something on your iPad in your bedroom. I don’t mean leave them to their own devices entirely, but I sometimes feel being around guests morning, noon and night so intense

We have guests again this weekend, and whilst I enjoy hosting, I’ve done so much of it (jointly with DH) over Christmas, that I’m a bit drained by the constant socialising and really would love nothing better than to have a lazy chilled one this weekend 😬

I wonder if it’s possible to have guests stay but still feel that you’ve had a relaxed weekend when they leave…

I wouldn’t say you can have a relaxed weekend but depending on the guests you can definitely duck out here and there for a long bath or to “catch up on emails”. It’s easiest if they are grandparents who want to sss your kids or people coming to your area for a particular reason but just staying at your house. If they are friends who are coming for the sole purpose of spending time with you, or if they are not the type of people to do anything on their own, it’s trickier.

Nope not rude
Depending on the guests

Is it family members you can tell to help themselves to food and drinks and put telly on or go for walks or would want to go out on their own for free hours ?
As long as they've not been abandoned and uncomfortable sat on sofa worrying what to do.. sounds like your DH will be around. He can host if more his guests..,

I wouldn't survive my mothers staying visits if I didn't disappear to my bedroom for hours some days. And I think highly of my mother! She talks a lot though Wink

Having to do something ‘for work’ is always a good excuse. I used to say I had some marking that had to be done. We sometimes suggest outings that visitors might like to do on their own.
