Sad about getting rid of Christmas tree!!

I'm being utterly ridiculous I know but I always feel really sad about getting rid of my real Christmas tree, almost like dumping an old friend !! It arrived all damp and smelling gorgeous and in its net, me and dd decorated it beautifully and it has gladdened my heart for a month. I'm looking at it now feeling really sad about it going next week. Anyone else ??!

I'm sad every year about it. I'm the polar opposite of the 'cant wait to take it down' crew. Ours will still be up for a wee bit yet though until 12th night.

I've already decided to keep up some of our outside lights, and in fact strung up more in the garden early this evening Grin

StoneofDestiny · 30/12/2021 22:02

Nope - I like when they are down and I can start spring cleaning, throw the windows open and wait til daffodils are available to buy in the supermarket 😂

Quornflakegirl · 30/12/2021 22:12

I took ours down today with glee. I hate up after Boxing Day.

ClaraThree · 30/12/2021 22:16

Yes I feel the same. Will leave it up as long as possible, when is 12th Night?

WarmForDecember · 30/12/2021 22:24

5th of January. The epiphany is the following day and the decorations should be down by the end of that day (I think).

lightisnotwhite · 30/12/2021 22:31

Me too. I don’t wait for 12th Night but always leave them up to see in the New Year. They look so pretty and celebratory.

Oneborneverydecade · 30/12/2021 22:33

Ours went today, I'm enjoying the space. We bought a tree in a pot so it's in the garden until next year - hopefully

Strokethefurrywall · 30/12/2021 22:41

Mine came down today, but I don’t do real trees anymore as I can bare the needles dropping.
We also live on a caribbean island so real trees have to be shipped down and depending on the stock you may end up with a half dead one by Christmas Eve.
I’d absolutely have a real tree if I could rent one every year that gets returned and replanted to a forest each year. Thankfully I’ve just got a pre-lit that got yanked apart and chucked under the stairs!

CatsArePeople · 30/12/2021 22:51

I'm always sad. But i have a plastic tree. It gets packed up neatly uptil next year. Its decades old. Let the real trees live.

dudsville · 30/12/2021 22:55

I used to develop a bizarre attachment to the Christmas tree so in the end I got a fake one. I'm the only one of my friends to use a fake tree but I love it and I no longer have unreasonable guilt when I take it to the tree tip.

Spudina · 30/12/2021 22:56

I’m dreading taking mine down. I’m thinking of getting some kind of fairy lights for my houseplants to compensate. And I did get multiple candles for Christmas!

Yika · 30/12/2021 23:00

I enjoy every minute of my tree and leave it up till 12th night but feel ready to move on to bleary dull old January after that. It doesn’t have its special magic if it goes up too soon or outlasts the Christmas season.

MrsJoker · 30/12/2021 23:01

I keep all of my decs up until the feast of the epiphany on 6th Jan, and have started keeping up at least some of my decs till Candlemas (2nd Feb).
There is a historical precedent but it’s mainly because this time of year (and these last few years particularly) needs many, many sparkly lights.

Yika · 30/12/2021 23:03

Maybe the sadness calls for a new ritual or tradition … a letting go … what do you think is behind it?

SoftSheen · 30/12/2021 23:03

Next year, get a pot-grown tree and put it in the garden after Christmas. Then you can bring it in again to use next Christmas (our tree is currently doing it's 11th Christmas).

Xmasiscancelledagain · 30/12/2021 23:07

I don't get sad about the tree itself. More sad that it's another Christmas and another year over. Plus my holidays with the kids are finished.

I'm already feeling a bit pants today when I realised I have less than a week left off with them. I feel like we've done naff all together this year.

Sciurus83 · 30/12/2021 23:11

@strokethefurrywall you live on a Caribbean island? Wow! I mean derail, but I'd love to know how you ended up there!

WaitinginVain · 30/12/2021 23:13

Yes, I am with you OP. Real trees here that go up fairly late so they're still nice for Christmas but keep all decorations up until 6th January.

I'm always sad to see them go - everything always looks so bare and bleak.

Sciurus83 · 30/12/2021 23:13

And I'm leaving mine up for longer. I love my decs this year it's too soon before New Year!

UndertheCedartree · 30/12/2021 23:13

Oh yes, my tree is still sparkling away. I'd love to keep it the whole of January! Depending on when we recover from Covid it may get a stay!

GrumpyPanda · 30/12/2021 23:22

@StoneofDestiny

Nope - I like when they are down and I can start spring cleaning, throw the windows open and wait til daffodils are available to buy in the supermarket 😂
Hate to break it to you but unlikely you'll find many daffodils this year due to the lack of harvest workers ;-)
AlanThePig · 30/12/2021 23:34

Living room went yesterday. Cleaned and decluttered and looking nice and bear again.
I have left the tat tree in the kitchen though because that one makes me smile when I walk past it.

CriminalOrator · 30/12/2021 23:38

Me. Always. I cannot bear the day the tree comes down. It’s such a beacon of colour and light and joy.

Mykittensmittens · 30/12/2021 23:42

Well ours isn’t going for another few days, but when it does, DH will de-branch it and the trunk will be dried for fuel.

The branches will be taken up to the alpaca farm. Alpacas absolutely love eating Christmas trees. So I’m happy for both those outcomes

lollipoprainbow · 31/12/2021 08:45

It's not so much about taking down the decorations I don't mind that it's just that my tree is still as fresh as the day I got it and I feel sad about dumping it outside !!
