Am I married?

Nc-d as family on here

Me and dh (if that’s who he is…) got married (if that’s what we did…) a few years ago abroad, just us. Recently needed to find our wedding certificate for something and realised, for the first time, they recorded dh as a bachelor and not the divorcee that he was 😱

I’ve googled it to death but can’t see anything helpful. We told them before we arrived in the country that he’d been married before and they said just bring the divorce certificate, which we did, but never realised no one actually ever asked to see it…

Are we legally married or not?!

Yabu - yes, you’re married
Yanbu - no, you’re not legally married

Is the marriage abroad legal in your country of residence?

NailSaloon · 30/12/2021 20:01

You need to ask a solicitor.

Jessi1972 · 30/12/2021 20:04

I would suggest making an appointment at your local registry office and take all your documents with you.

You may just have to pay a small fee to get the certificate changed.

As far as I know I'm the eyes of the law of you believe you were legally married then you are.

Final point didn't something similar happen with Jerry Hall and Mick Jaggar when they got divorced. He claimed it wasn't a real marriage but I think the judge ruled it was.

Good luck

Call CAB. They can direct you to a local surgery hour for this sort of thing and there’s a good chance you can get some free advice specific to the particulars of your situation.

EightNationNavy · 30/12/2021 20:31

Nope, Hall/Jagger thing was very different from your case and it was ruled invalid.

Umamiwed · 30/12/2021 20:42

@HippeePrincess yes

Do local registers offices deal with certification from abroad? I didn’t think they did?

Similarly, how would I find a solicitor with knowledge of matrimonial law in that particular country Confused

I’ve also not yet brought this to Dh’s attention. Not sure why

I presume you'd have to contact an official in that country.

ShippingNews · 31/12/2021 09:46

The fact that the registrar wrote the word "bachelor" doesn't make the marriage invalid. As long as your DH was not actually married it doesn't make any difference what they wrote.

Cocomarine · 31/12/2021 10:16

You say you spoke to someone who told you that you needed to bring the divorce papers. Why start with Google and mumsnet instead of that person?
Use that person to put you in touch with a matrimonial solicitor in the country where you got married.

DrSbaitso · 31/12/2021 10:20

What country did you marry in and what type of wedding was it?

GoodPrincessWenceslas · 31/12/2021 13:02

Contact the embassy for whichever country it was.
