Blocked ear and flight in 2 days! Help

So shamlessly posting for traffic but I really need some advice.

So I am recovering from a pretty nasty cold and woke up with a very painful blocked ear this morning. I normally live in NI and currently over in England at parents house. We fly back on the 31st but I am terrified of getting a burst eardrum if I fly.
The ear is fully blocked and leaking continuously.
I have phoned mums doctors surgery who refused to help, been to 3 different pharmacies who all said there is nothing that they could do, I need antibiotics. I've phoned 111 twice today and still waiting on a call back from urgent care. They are supposedly calling before 6am 🤞.
So I guess any advice,
I originally started with olive oil but no help so far. I've been resting on a hot water bottle and it helps with the pain but not sure how much that has helped the actual issue. And back to back paracetamol and ibuprofen. Anyone any experience with flying like this?? I have always had very painful ears flying anyway so I'm pretty terrified of the pain/damage that might happen.

Could you get a ferry instead
Also I’m not sure it’s wise to put olive oil into an infected ear - maybe a pharmacist might be able to help

Sorry - just see about the 3 pharmacies
I’d get a ferry if at all possible

I had a burst eardrum last week, as you said needed antibiotics for it.

Woke in agony with fluid leaking then the next day the fluid turned green (sorry)

GP told me that the fluid and pain was when it initially burst then the green the next day meant it was infected. From what you're describing yours sounds like it's already burst if there's clear fluid. Make sure you keep it dry and don't put any oil in it. Just need to wait on it healing and if its green you'll need antibiotics .

Ps if it's infected a doctor or pharmacy is the only choice. Just sit and make a scene til they give you antibio (fellow nhs worker here...!!!)

You could try a nasal decongestant like Sinex spray - it will also work to open up your blocked eustachian tubes, there are also decongestant tablets (use the ones with psuedophedrine not phenylephrine as its not as effective).
Swallowing helps open up the eustachian tube too so suck on a hard sweet as you ascend and descend.
I would not be inclined to put anything in to your ear until a medic has looked down it to check the eardrum is intact - this could allow unwanted substances to leak into your inner ear which could cause an infection.

The leaking does sound like you have a bit of an infection and it is possible for the tympanic membrane (eardrum) to burst on its own so you need this checked before you fly ideally.

Can't believe the pharmacy or doctor is not helping you! What a joke. Could you go to A&E or a minor injuries clinic as a last resort? I know someone will be along to shout that down but if pharmacies and doctors are not willing to help, what is someone in pain with a potentially serious infection supposed to do?
Hope you get help soon.

Don't fly with a blocked/infected ear. I made that mistake about 6 years ago and my eardrum burst on landing and I ended up on antibiotics and had a constant ringing/white noise in my ear for over a month which was horrendous. I hope you get seen by somebody soon, you need antibiotics!

GreenGreenTreesOfHome · 29/12/2021 23:40

DEFO get a ferry instead @Yuppie20

There is a strong chance your eardrum will rupture if you fly.

Yuppie20 · 29/12/2021 23:48

Thanks everyone for replying! I am feeling so sorry for myself.
I have to fly with a 2yr old and my partner. We have been discussing me getting the ferry over a day later, would be a long journey up to Liverpool but I'm not sure I want to risk the flight 😭
I'm still waiting on phone call from urgent care which I was promised would be within 12 hours but honestly I can't see what they can do now as antibiotics won't have time to work.
The fluid is clear and slightly bloody at times. I was praying it was just wax that needed dislodged but alas its certainly an infection.
I tell you its been a trying Xmas this year!
