I’ve become a sloth

Hele1986h · 29/12/2021 18:51

Can’t even blame the pandemic, this is my own doing 😭

I’m just such a sloth nowadays. I used to have a group of friends that I saw regularly but now they’re busy with DCs (no DCs here yet) which is fair enough (fully appreciate they want to be with their kids!!)

Anyway, I’ve become mega sloth like! I just get up, WFH often in pyjamas, finish work, crack open a bottle of wine most nights, or if no wine then probs a takeaway and lay on the sofa watching Netflix.

I know IABU but how do I get out of this pattern 😞

Not even a cute sloth like Sid, a chubby, spotty sloth 🦥

Join the gym!
Quickest way out of this kind of thinking!

Give yourself a really low target like going on the treadmill for just 5 minutes, walking, but make sure you go every day or say set days multiple times a week, like Mon, Wed, Fri, Sun.

The habit will help snap you out of this, even though you aren't going for a long time and the fact you are going for a really really short time will make it easy and bearable.

It will build its own momentum.

UserBot99 · 29/12/2021 19:13

not judging, even if you want to be judged!
Instead, a question, have you watched peaky blinders. Im going to faire le sloth for the next 4 seasons. My pyjamas are so warm.

OlgaDaPolga1 · 29/12/2021 19:16

Sounds bliss to me

Timeforabiscuit · 29/12/2021 19:17

I don't see it as sloth, I see it as my "fallow" times, time to properly recharge before life inevitably changes gear/kicks in the gonads* delete as appropriate.

Each time I've done this I'm thoroughly glad I did just stop for a bit.

ClaudiusTheGod · 29/12/2021 19:28

Sloths only poo once a week. Just saying Wink

Emerald5hamrock · 29/12/2021 19:31

You're hibernating. Give yourself a deadline to put an end to this if it is getting to you, enjoy the next fortnight.
I do think wfh doesn't help its easy to stay in your pj's and it snowballs from there.

Helpfriend · 29/12/2021 19:42

Thanks all for being so kind 💓 @ironorchids you’re 100% right I need to get my butt back to the gym. I used to go twice a week but have stopped since the pandemic as was a bit afraid of catching the C word from all the aspirating!

Do need to go back to normal life now though 👍

Onatree · 29/12/2021 19:43

If a lifespan might be 75 years …

And of that 3 years is a pandemic, utterly devastating and disrupting life,

Then - what’s the harm in having hibernated for that while a bit? What’s the harm in having taking it a bit easy? Is hibernating during a few years of storm what you’ll regret at the end of those 70-80 years?

GenerallyVeryUnreasonable · 29/12/2021 19:47

Shower first thing every day. Brush teeth. Get dressed. Have something for breakfast that isn’t sugar or toast. Go for a walk morning and afternoon. Stick at these long enough to turn them into habits.

Babyg1995 · 29/12/2021 19:47

This is me I enjoy it too much to motivate myself to change though Blush

Helpfriend · 29/12/2021 19:48

@ClaudiusTheGod 😂 thankfully things haven’t got that drastic yet 😂

Theblacksheepandme · 29/12/2021 19:59

I did similar to you for a while minus the alcohol and unhealthy food. I realised I couldn't go on. I made a conscious decision to copy what I did every morning when I actually went to work minus the makeup. I go for a walk at lunch for 45 minutes. I think you need to make a conscious decision to make yourself go out every day and get some fresh air and a bit of exercise. It is all about changing your old routine to a healthier better routine. Maybe try to be healthy with your eating and no alcohol Monday to Friday. Treat yourself Saturday and Sunday.

Crunchymum · 29/12/2021 19:59

Make sure you get dressed each and every work day. No PJ's.

Make sure you take a proper lunch break and go for a 45 minute walk.

Meal plan, shop for your meal plan and delete Deliveroo.

Make wine the exception not the rule.

Try to read a book a week, preferably before bed (so no screen time on work nights)

Reconnect with friends, even if you just join them at the park with their kids.

Make plans. Even if its just one little thing per week.... museum / gallery / canal walk etc (I appreciate its harder with Covid)

  • all these things I do when I am motivated and feeling mentally well. I am a sloth myself a lot of the time Shock
IsAnybodyListening · 29/12/2021 20:01

You sound a bit like I was. This is my work in progress so far..

For a start, i now have a shower, do my hair, get dressed and even put a bit of mascara and lippy on before I start my day WFH (I had got in the habit of bathing on my lunch break for a while!) This immediately makes me feel better.

Next, I have started eating lunch that is healthy rather than skipping lunch and just ramming a a couple of kit-kats and a bag of crisps in my face when I get a chance.

My evenings however are fairly sloth like, it feels too 'covidy' out there to do stuff. Not that I actually remember what doing stuff was like ;) Upshot. Watched everything that has ever been made possibly ever so leaving my current job to become a film critic feels like a viable option atm.

Martha8 · 29/12/2021 20:14

Low vitamin D? Hopefully you are taking some.

2022newname · 29/12/2021 20:31

I’m the same OP. What’s worse is that I wfh before the pandemic and was ok then. Now if I’m honest there are days when I don’t even brush my teeth until mid morning.

I feel like crap because of it.

So following for ideas and sending solidarity.

Dreamstate · 30/12/2021 01:10

Not ao much sloth like but definitely in cant be asked to anywhere. I want to e.g. go see a movie but then keep putting it off not even cos of covid reasons just so used to being in house now that going anywhere feels too time consuming iyswim.

KloppsTeeth · 30/12/2021 01:24

Me too. I have covid, and self isolation ends soon but before that I was barely doing anything. I’ve gained weight since the pandemic. I need to lose that weight and get healthy again. My fear of Covid had turned me into a recluse. I’ve had it now, and whilst I might get it again I can’t keep my life on hold because it is making me unhealthy.
I’m going to get some good walking shoes on order and start walking for 2 x 20-30 mins a day and build up from there.

Cheesypasta · 30/12/2021 01:39

No advice but I know the feeling!

flirtygirl · 30/12/2021 04:40

What's wrong with being a sloth?

Belledan1 · 30/12/2021 10:01

I am same. Wfh for ages. Do go back in office one or two days a week now so have to do hair etc. Been really lazy over xmas holidays as family are all working and I dont drive but I made myself go for a walk yesterday and meeting two different friends tomorrow and Sunday for a coffee in a cafe. Next week I am going to make my lunch the night before like a healthy salad or soup so I eat that at lunchtime and also try and go for a walk each day.

HacerSonarSusPasos · 30/12/2021 10:12

It's languishing. I know it all too well.
Could you think of any hobbies you can do from home that you previously enjoyed but stopped for some reason?

Painting
Crocheting
Origami
Collecting stuff
Papier mache flowers
Juggling
...

I've just picked up reading again because I was horrified at my phone usage stats. Used to be an avid reader, but totally lost it at the start of the pandemic. Read almost nothing in 2020. 12 books in 2021, half of which over the last couple months. Feels good to be back in the habit.

TwinkleToesStrikesAgain · 30/12/2021 10:23

Get a play list of your favourite upbeat stuff, the ones that make you want to dance in the kitchen. Brush your teeth, put on some lippy, get your headphones on and head out with your playlist and walk with purpose, smiling internally and externally maybe.

And repeat

Gemi33 · 30/12/2021 10:39

Hi OP

I'm exactly the same - I don't have children, live alone, work from home...feel like one day just blends into the next. I have no motivation to do anything and just can't seem to get out of this rut!

xx
