To want a sofa in my kitchen?

Or an egg chair?

I have a very large kitchen diner, one side is the kitchen and the other side is for dining. We don't often use the table, so im thinking of getting a drop leaf table that can stay in the corner, then getting a sofa, or more ideally an egg chair, and a couple of house plants. Both me and my DC have additional needs so the idea would be to put fluffy blankets and I'd make some curtains of tulle curtains for the egg chair so that when needed, we can enclose ourselves in there and calm down/take a minute.

Is this a stupid idea? Will it look daft? We hardly use the space as it is so it would be nice to make use of this space.

I’ve done similar. We are a family of 5 but rarely eat together so there was no need for a big dining table. I got a very small one (that does fold out big enough to seat us all) and got a corner sofa. It’s so cosy. We don’t actually use our living room at all now so will be changing that to a home office / gym room in the new year.

Sounds bloody lovely actually. A bit like a sensory swing, but as actual furniture that fits in with the rest of your house. I think it's a wonderful idea.

Scrabblecrabapple · 29/12/2021 17:02

I love mine. Do it.

Darbs76 · 29/12/2021 17:02

It’s very normal now, I think it’s a good idea

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 29/12/2021 17:10

Sounds really lovely!

Hidethecrisps · 29/12/2021 17:45

Do it! I love my kitchen sofa. Nice little spot to sit and have a coffee or read a book. We call it the snug.

Hoppinggreen · 29/12/2021 17:46

I have one and me and the cats love it

Rexthesnail · 29/12/2021 17:47

Ah I feel so much better knowing others have done it! It's not as odd as I first thought then. It just seems like such a waste of a good space that I could make into something really useful to us as a family

Why wouldn't you? You would use it, you have the space, you think the family would enjoy and find it therapeutic...no reason not to! And if anyone thinks it would be silly who cares that's on them!

plominoagain · 29/12/2021 18:03

Why not ? We did . It is now the dogs favourite place to sit and watch me cook , but everyone uses it

billy1966 · 29/12/2021 18:09

Sofa in a large kitchen is really lovely, so cosy.

Or two arm chairs.
Very comfortable to sit down and have chat in.

IntermittentParps · 29/12/2021 18:09

Sounds great. We have a biggish kitchen table, a sofa and two armchairs. We all sit in there to read etc. It’s much cosier than the living room, which we really only use when watching telly.

Helpstopthepain · 29/12/2021 18:14

We have a large sofa in our kitchen, very much used although mostly by our pets!
I wouldn’t get rid of the table for a sofa though.

Funnylittlefloozie · 29/12/2021 18:16

I'd love a sofa in the kitchen! Go for it. Have you got enough room for the egg chair as well, because I think that, with the drapes, sounds like a brilliant idea for those who need a little time out from the world.

Fetchthevet · 29/12/2021 18:32

Ooh, go for it OP! It sounds lovely.

Rexthesnail · 29/12/2021 19:18

No I think it will have to be sofa or egg chair, not both as I want some plants around it too. Also, it would be a double sofa or a double egg chair.

Im feeling more and more confident about this. I might actually start looking at the things I'd like!

I want to do this. Have a big kitchen but table in dining room
I've visualised a red chesterfield 2 seater.

However it could only sit in front of the heater lol

jelly79 · 29/12/2021 19:58

I have a sofa in the kitchen which is the right height to be used at the table or I use it as a snug area too

Suzanne999 · 29/12/2021 20:00

Sounds lovely. I’ve always loved the idea of a sofa in the kitchen but never had the right house.

BungleandGeorge · 29/12/2021 20:07

Where will you eat? Are you going to have to get the table out at every mealtime? If so, it would be a definite no from me!

notacooldad · 29/12/2021 20:09

You know the layout of your kitchen and what it would suit.
Why would it be a stupid idea🤷‍♀️

Freelady · 29/12/2021 20:13

We only have a small.kir hen but we have squezed two.chairs in and rhey are used daily for cofee.n a natter

To want a sofa in my kitchen?
Freelady · 29/12/2021 20:15

We used to.have a 24 x 25 feet kitchen ..in one half was rhe kichen units the other a massive sofa amd woodbuner .. it was best room.in the house.( which is why ive tried to.squeeze.chairs in !)

DisforDarkChocolate · 29/12/2021 20:17

My fantasy kitchen has a sofa in it. An egg chair would make me feel claustrophobic but a comfy sofa would be perfect. My only condition would be it had washable covers. Heaven.

blueshiningsea · 29/12/2021 20:20

We have one and it’s ace. It’s a small grey one from John Lewis that fits 1 person comfortably and 2 people at a push. Really useful if any member of the family wants to read a book or watch something on the second tv we put on the wall or just sit and chat to someone cooking. Me and my husband both prefer that sofa to the ones in the living room!
