Friend lied about engagement

namechanger6977 · 28/12/2021 21:26

A friend of mine (lets call her Emma) who I have been friends with for the past 5 years posted a picture to our whatsapp group on her birthday(August) of a ring on her ring finger with the message I got my ring.
We all commented messages of congratulations, when's the big day etc Not met up with this group of friends since June but met with a few of them today. Started talking to Emma asking when the big day will be etc, she starts laughing I'm not engaged it was a joke I was just messing.
AIBU to think why would you lie for the past 5 months about this?

But the ring was on her right hand...

Landof · 28/12/2021 21:27

That's a strange thing to lie about. Has there been a relationship breakdown since the engagement?

How do you know?

@Landof op says so I'm her first post.

VladmirsPoutine · 28/12/2021 21:29

Was it not just a joke that you took seriously? Unless for the past 5 months she's been sending pictures of potential flower arrangements.

peboh · 28/12/2021 21:30

Oh never mind. I read the post wrong. Assuming pp did too.

Linguini · 28/12/2021 21:32

....of a ring on her ring finger with the message I got my ring
That's the left hand I'm either confused or PP are....

Linguini · 28/12/2021 21:33

That sounds batshit OP.
Also it's really bad luck to wear a ring on your ring finger when you're not engaged! She should be worried......

Lovelydiscusfish · 28/12/2021 21:37

Has she continued to talk about the engagement throughout this time?

Maybe they were engaged and her fella has changed his mind and now she feels embarrassed about it?

It is a bit odd but I wouldn’t worry about it too much.

SachaStark2 · 28/12/2021 21:40

“Bad luck to wear a ring when she’s not engaged” and “she should be worried” (worried about what exactly?), what a load of nonsense.

What’s the situation, OP? Has she kept up a running string of bridal stuff over the last few months, or was it the one post that was just a bit of a weird joke?

Also, are you the kind of group of friends who go on and on about marriage and “your turn next”, and “put a ring on it”, and “tick rock” all the time, until she made that joke to offset the questions?

rattlemehearties · 28/12/2021 21:41

Has it been mentioned since? Have you not seen this acquaintance since that message?

shouldistop · 28/12/2021 21:45

I've re-read the op a couple of times and can't see where op said the ring was on her friends right hand

No not the sort of friends who go on about marriage, she would be the first in the group to get married. I would say that it was more of a one off joke but there have been a few comments about the wedding in the past few months but not from her from other people.

Me either, it says ring finger which is your left hand....isn't it?
godmum56 · 28/12/2021 22:16

I am not sure why this bothers you OP?

eveningbubble · 28/12/2021 22:35

ring finger = left hand ... no? Not that it matters, she was implying for months she was engaged. I'd just feel a bit sorry for her, she wants it, she wanted to live the feeling of it for a while, bit strange but now when she does engaged nobody will really believe it (not that anyone really cares as much as she believes).

ChoccySprinkles · 28/12/2021 23:20

Right hand = correct hand for wedding ring. Not that it was the opposite of her left hand.
