To think that Baz Luhrman's 'Everybody's free to wear sunscreen' should be on the school curriculum (light hearted)

It moves me every time I hear it!

One of the teachers read it at DS2s year 6 leavers service. I think everyone was in tears by the end!

CouldThisReallyBe · 27/12/2021 22:29

Aw...I wish they'd done this at my DS's school. I can't get him to listen to it Sad

DH and I left high school in 1999 - the year it came out. They played it at our leaver’s assembly!

Same! Absolutely love it!
ShitRunAway · 27/12/2021 22:47

It was on radio 2 today

YouCantTourniquetTheTaint · 27/12/2021 22:49

I agree I was 14 when this came out and I often think of it. Its a good message for kids to hear.

VashtaNerada · 27/12/2021 22:53

Although the song is Baz Lurman’s the speech is Mary Schmich. I feel bad that she often doesn’t get the credit! It’s great. I’ve got my daughter to read it more than once.

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 27/12/2021 23:21

I heard it on R2 this morning for the first time in ages. Made me quite emotional. I was young when it was released - just finished my PGCE and starting on Grown Up life. Struck me today what great advice it actually was/still is

GaolBhoAlba · 27/12/2021 23:30

Havent heard that in ages! Love it, so thank you for posting.

Inastatus · 27/12/2021 23:35

My mum loved this when it first came out but I didn’t appreciate it at the time. I need to get my teens to listen to it and hope they take it on board.

I never knew that - thanks for clarifying.

That's exactly how I felt when I heard it today which was the reason for the post Smile.

Oh that'll be one of my funeral songs Grin

switswoo81 · 28/12/2021 09:22

I left school in 1999 too so I remember it well then.
Every lesson from the speech/song is as relevant now as then just change beauty magazines to social media.

Whatafustercluck · 28/12/2021 09:23

I absolutely love it. My mum hates it - says she finds it patronising and switches it off every time it comes on 😂

KatherineofGaunt · 28/12/2021 09:26

Another 1999 school leaver here. We played it a lot in the 6th Form common room. Whenever I hear it it takes me back to a time before life became complicated - love it!

BenjiMcSchmenzie · 28/12/2021 09:27

We play it to our students in tutor group on the last day of the summer term every year 😎

TheKeatingFive · 28/12/2021 09:28

Another 1999 school leaver here. The memories ❤️

Heruka · 28/12/2021 09:29

99 leaver too! Was a big part of the memories.

That's a great idea! At least it will get people to hear it. Those I've introduced it to who haven't heard it (yes there are those Wink) are 'converted' by it Smile

Teacher here - good idea! I’ll have to do something with that at the end of the summer term.

Smile so I'm guessing you don't like it?

Not for me. Some good stuff, but too many Don'ts, too much cheese and too long. And what's with the wailing?

GoldenFondue · 28/12/2021 20:26

Aw I love this. We all loved it when we were about 14 and it came out, takes me right back. We wrote all the words down, no lyric sites on your smartphone then!
