AIBU at the word bollocks being used in Clifford the Big Red Dog?

As per the title. I watched this in the cinema with my 6 and 9 year olds. I knew it was a PG and checked to see if it was suitable on common sense media as well as googling reviews, after previously making a mistake thinking Ghostbusters was okay (I didn't realise it had loads of swearing!). Nothing was mentioned at all on there. No other googling brought up this either. I know bollocks is hardly hugely offensive, but as I have an SEN 9 year old, who has great difficulties with impulse control, I am careful over what he sees. Swearing and violence is something we actively avoid.
Anyway, AIBU to think that I should have been able to find that information beforehand?
Also, is it even necessary?! It is used in a scene where Jack Whitehall says (in an American accent) "You see, if I hadn’t moved here when I was two, I would’ve grown up with a British accent. Bollocks. Rubbish. Collywobbles". I don't even know why it was necessary, but there you go!

Agreed. Likewise the 1996 American film Matilda, where Pam Ferris bellows "YOU PISS WORM!" in a child's face.

sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea · 27/12/2021 00:16

Is it not mentioned on the BBFC guidance? They're normally really good at picking up stuff like this! I wouldn't have been too happy either.

ThisMustBeMyDream · 27/12/2021 00:21

It just says mild bad language. I don't think bollocks is mild particularly. Bloody, crap, that's what I'd think would be mild. Bollocks is put on the same kind of language as shit/piss/fuck.

I agree Op

Spasiba · 27/12/2021 00:24

I can't agree that bollocks is the same level as those words, particularly fuck.
But I do agree that it's unnecessary in a film made for children.

ForgedInFire · 27/12/2021 00:31

I think its a bit unnecessary but it wouldn't stop me from letting my child watch the film, I might say to them "oh thats a rude word that he used". There are a couple of standalone swear words in the Harry Potter films and I let my 6 year old watch them- I think Ron tells Harry to "piss off" in one of them. I wouldn't put the odd mild swear word on the same level as violence, even though I generally dislike swearing in front of kids

dinahsdishes · 27/12/2021 00:35

Bollocks is nowhere near as bad as shit or fuck

Completely unnecessary through

SoniaFouler · 27/12/2021 00:38

Jack Whitehall has form for this. YANBU.

EnjoyingTheArmoire · 27/12/2021 00:39

The BBFC states that these particular words are used.

I'd be surprised to hear it, but presumably it's there to entertain the adults (rightly or wrongly).

I'd say crap is worse than bollocks.

But agree, it's unnecessary for a kids film.

WildImaginings · 27/12/2021 00:41

Bollocks isn't even approaching the level of 'fuck'

There is a massive difference between Harry Potter and Clifford the big red dog
shouldistop · 27/12/2021 00:42

Thanks op, I was going to take my 5yo over the holidays but I won't now.

I don’t think Jack Whitehall wrote the script? Confused
SantaClawsServiette · 27/12/2021 00:45

Yes, I'd say inappropriate for Clifford, lots of kids at the right age for that may only just e school starting age.

SoniaFouler · 27/12/2021 00:45

I don’t think Jack Whitehall wrote the script?

Well whenever he is involved with something, bad language always follows somehow. Which isn’t a bad thing, but not for a children’s film.

MaryAndGerryLivingInDerry · 27/12/2021 00:46

I’d be very surprised to hear the word bollocks in a PG film!

Nancydrawn · 27/12/2021 00:46

Bollocks is nowhere near fuck!

That's ridiculous. I'd put bollocks alongside crap. Or perhaps between crap and shit.

This is somewhat fun.

That said, it's unnecessary. There are other British words that are probably more appropriate for Clifford.

Off to muse re: bollocks.

Snoozer11 · 27/12/2021 00:57

I'm sure your kids will get over hearing a slightly rude word.

whatnumber · 27/12/2021 00:58

Bollocks isn't even approaching the level of 'fuck'
Strange how people view things as I think it's just as bad. Why do film makers feel the need to include anything like this. Such a shame.
ForgedInFire · 27/12/2021 00:59

@SoniaFouler fair enough, that was a bad example to use. I used to love the Clifford series when I was a kid and wouldn't expect any bad language in a Clifford movie really

Flowers500 · 27/12/2021 01:05

I think bollocks is one of the mildest possible? Like way less than crap

Izzycat28 · 27/12/2021 01:18

@Flowers500 I agree!
Doubt I would even notice it being said…

SirVixofVixHall · 27/12/2021 01:19

I think bollocks is ruder than crap. Crappy seems hardly rude at all. Oddly shitty is less rude than shit though.
Rudeness scale in my mind, from mild to severe..
1 . Crappy.

  1. Crap.
  2. Bloody, damn.
  3. Bollocks, arse.
  4. Shitty.
6.shit
  1. Piss.
  2. Tits.
  3. Fuck
10. ……..
