Put chicken in and potatoes, The potatoes seemed to take forever, so thought that once the chicken was done I'd whack up the heat for the potatoes. Anyway the chicken isn't cooked properly. I think it's either because there was some foil attached to the fan or the oven isn't working properly? It's been in the oven for nearly 2 hours! Even if I carry on cooking it now, zapping the chicken, will it have been cooked too slowly producing too much bacteria?

Thank you. Gutted!

Slow cooking chicken is fine.

Haggisfish3 · 25/12/2021 15:56

Nah it’ll be fine.

Wingedharpy · 25/12/2021 15:57

How hot is the oven?
How big is the chicken?
Is the chicken stuffed?

stupiduser · 25/12/2021 15:57

It will be fine. You can slow cook chicken, it just may not be as juicy because it is the opposite to beef and the like

pigsDOfly · 25/12/2021 15:58

I don't think cooking works like that does it?

As long as it's cooked through and you're not eating it half raw, surely it should be fine.

Otherwise you wouldn't be able to cook chicken in a slow cooker.

Ihearthosesleighbellsringing · 25/12/2021 15:59

It will be fine, carry on cooking it. What size chicken is it and did it have the cooking length on the pack?
This can be saved, don't panic! Don't blast the heat and expect good results, you could just end up burning the outside.

myothercarisaskoda · 25/12/2021 16:00

Thank you! Feel so stupid. I've cut the chicken up and put on a baking tray, I've left the pots in and since I took the stray bit of foil away from the fan it seems to be hotter! So I'll assume the chicken will be okay then if I finish it off in smaller pieces.

Do you have the heating element of the oven on? I ask, because my oven has a defrost function where the fan works but its only barely warm and certainly not high heat.

If its still raw/pink, and you need to eat soon, I'd remove the legs/wings and chop into even pieces then it will cook in 30mins. Was there stuffing in it?

Hairyfriend · 25/12/2021 16:03

Cross post OP about chopping it up!!! I'm sure it will delicous.

myothercarisaskoda · 25/12/2021 16:04

I had the heat on fan 170 as per instructions for chicken. It's definitely the stray foil that's the cause. I'm going to finish the potatoes off and do the chicken that I've cut at the end. Thank you everyone!

When you think it's ready , take it out , put on plate and put a skewer or sharp knife through biggest part of leg , wait a minute or so and check the juices that has ran out . If it's straw coloured and fairly clear , it's cooked . Wrap in foil and put aside whilst you cook your veg .

myothercarisaskoda · 25/12/2021 16:04

No doing stuffing separately.

Buy a meat thermometer. Takes all the guess work out of it.

BigYellowHat · 25/12/2021 16:46

Slow cooking chicken is fine. Let’s put it this way, we once had an oven and we didn’t realise for about 5 months that we were grilling everything 😂 Our roast chicken took 5 hours and we were fine!

myothercarisaskoda · 25/12/2021 17:04

@BigYellowHat excellent story!

Well thank you everyone. It turned out great. I've obviously never slow cooked chicken before...I have now! It was a Christmas meal for one and I've got another one for tomorrow!
