To call an ambulance for my baby?

So my baby is 3 weeks and caught the horrid cold I had at delivery. Day 10 and 14 midwife and HV said he seems ok but watch out for retraction, as colds can become bronchilitis, if he starts retracting he needs to get to a and e asap. He looked worse today, couldn’t get to see GP so sent a video, GP said he seems ok but monitor. Tonight he started retracting more significantly and he’s been so sleepy, falling asleep in feeds. So I went to take him to hospital but my fucking car won’t start, and an error message has come up on the dashboard. Ubers keep cancelling and the only taxi firm answering have more than an hr wait.

I should call an ambulance right? I don’t want to over react and drain NHS but equally my little boy is struggling

Better to be safe than sorry. Call the ambulance.

bleachedgusset · 24/12/2021 23:53

Call an ambulance if he's really struggling.

TucciTucciTu · 24/12/2021 23:53

I would call - hopefully you’ll be seen soon. X

Netry · 24/12/2021 23:53

For a 3 weeks old I won’t hesitate. Hope he feels better soon.

WorriedGiraffe · 24/12/2021 23:54

Phone them, they would ALWAYS rather come and check on a newborn than not, they are human beings who will not judge you for doing the best for your baby. Also babies that small can deteriorate very quickly, I wouldn’t hesitate. Hopefully you’ll be home for Christmas dinner Flowers

Any friends or family? Even a neighbour? I dont know my neighbour but if someone knocked on my door needing to take their tiny baby to A&E I would be on it like a shot. Failing that then yes an ambulance but be prepared for a long wait.

Hawkmoth · 24/12/2021 23:55

Call the ambulance, and anyone you know with a car that could take you.

I hope baby is OK. I will keep you in my thoughts.

Imamumgetmeoutofhere · 24/12/2021 23:55

Call an ambulance. He's a baby, the can go downhill so rapidly it's not worth risking it

LibrariesGiveUsPower · 24/12/2021 23:55

Call them. If he’s sucking in under his ribs he needs to be seen.

Piggybuttons · 24/12/2021 23:55

Call an ambulance, he's still tiny and babies can become poorly quite quickly and if he's struggling then he needs to be seen. I hope he's feeling much better soon

FormerTilb · 24/12/2021 23:55

Rebeccasmoonnecklace · 24/12/2021 23:57

Definitely call an Ambulance, it sounds like your little man needs to be seen ASAP and you are following advice of HV and Midwife. Hope he starts to feel better soon Flowers

bloodyhoodedeyes · 24/12/2021 23:57

Literally no one, DH just flogged his car too, so we’ve been using mine as the family one. Only really know one neighbor and they’ve gone away for x mas :(

I’ve just called and they said they’ll come as an emergency.

I’m hoping I’m just completely overreacting and he’s fine and I’m just being ‘that mother’, not keen for a hospital admission

Definitely call an ambulance right away.

Lindy2 · 24/12/2021 23:58

If you feel he has worsened and you can't drive to a&e then yes call 999 for help. They may well send a first responders car to assess him in your home. That may well be quickest.

If you have family nearby or a neighbour who could drive you then that would also be an option.

I hope your baby gets well soon.

Tryagainplease · 24/12/2021 23:59

Ambulance OP. Don’t take the risk.

Tryagainplease · 25/12/2021 00:00

Failing that, call 111. The call handler may well send you an ambulance anyway after you’ve described the issue.
I hope your baby is ok x

astoundedgoat · 25/12/2021 00:00
