... to ask to you know anyone that subscribes to OnlyFans?

This is a follow on from a conversation with friends a while ago. (Maybe incorrectly) I'd assumed that onlyfans was basically porn, which people can find for free online anyway.

Two questions

  • Do you know anyone who subscribes to that site in real life?
  • Is there non-porn content?

Note: I have done some patreon donations in the past for music artists I like. So I'm thinking is similar to that.

I know someone (straight male) who posts pictures, I was surprised as I didn't think women would pay for it. Obviously they don't, it's all men!

Midnightpharma · 24/12/2021 17:54

There is definitely non-porn. It is known for porn in the same way Ibiza is known for partying. It isn't all there is. Anyone can sell their stuff on Onlyfans, it's also used by musicians, comedians etc etc...

PermanentTemporary · 24/12/2021 17:54

-no
-apparently yes, but why would you do that when everyone will just assume you're doing porn

tectonicplates · 24/12/2021 17:55

There is some non-adult content, but only a minority of it. About 90% of it is porn, that's a well-known thing. There will always be people who say "Oh, but not everything on there is porn", but come on, everyone knows what most people use it for.

It's not just about looking at photos though - you can also interact with the account holder by way of direct messaging, and many of them can make custom photos and videos if you're looking for something specific. It's much more personalised than a free site.

  1. Yes. A friend of mine (and her DH) subscribe to a couple that do amateur porn. I actually remember the name/handle of the couple, because she's mentioned it a few time (but won't mention it in the post). Apparently this couple offer advice, chat with people, give tips what they do, etc. She's actually showed me a few clips, it really is amateur, and no faces shown.
  1. No idea. I'd always assumed so, but could be totally wrong.
tectonicplates · 24/12/2021 18:04

And if I did have some kind of non-adult content that I wanted to sell by subscription, I wouldn't choose Onlyfans as I'd consider it an inappropriate site, and nobody really wants it showing on their credit card statement anyway. Sites like Patreon would be more appropriate. If you told someone you had an account on Onlyfans but there was nothing rude there, they'd say suuuuuure there isn't.

MorningStarling · 24/12/2021 18:04

It's mainly porn and people who pay for porn tend to keep that to themselves.

In theory there is a small amount of non-pornographic material on there, but nobody with any sense would openly state they operate on the site, or subscribe to anything on it, because even if their use is partially or even mainly not for porn, everyone will assume it is.

MorganKitten · 24/12/2021 18:52

Do you know anyone who subscribes to that site in real life?
Yes me and several other people I know

Is there non-porn content?
Yep

BasicDad · 24/12/2021 18:57

Yes. My XW!

The content on OF is overwhelmingly pornographic, even if there are some non-porn based contributors.

OmgIThinkILikeYou · 24/12/2021 19:07

I went on onlyfans to see what all the fuss was about. I couldn't really find any point but did find the exercise and cooking channels useful. I still sub for some of them, I would admit that irl, I don't care what people think about it.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 24/12/2021 20:28

The Internet was known for nerds and porn at the start, apparently.

SituationCritical · 24/12/2021 20:39

I don't know anyone who subscribes (or admits they do) but my friend has a very successful account and makes a lot of money so clearly many do!

ClareBlue · 25/12/2021 01:38

Nobody subscribes
The site makes millions

Hard to reconcile, but that's how it is, apparently

Atmywitsend29 · 25/12/2021 01:49

I don't personally know anyone who subscribes, or admits it, but I follow a sw on Instagram who sells her content on onlyfans and she's just bought a house outright, she makes insane money!

scarpa · 25/12/2021 02:06

I subscribe.

Only two creators - a guy I like for making super intimate, relaxed videos with a couple of collaborators. Lots of deliberate conversations about consent included, very female-gaze heavy. Worth every penny.

And a lesbian couple, again, who make videos designed for women, esp (in their words) queer women.

SoniaFouler · 25/12/2021 02:20

Note: I have done some patreon donations in the past for music artists I like. So I'm thinking is similar to that.

That’s what OnlyFans started out as - a competitor to Patreon. It became synonymous with the porn stuff later and went with that niche once it took off.

MargieMo · 25/12/2021 14:31

I'd only ever heard about onlyfans in the context of porn, and first heard about it in MN forums.

A friend of mine "supports" a few accounts. No idea how much, or what it involves exactly, beyond access to videos, but it is clear she has a bond/interaction with the couples. It seems to be basically amateur couples having sex. She was jokingly showing us some of this stuff (after a drunken summer party). The sex was couples, all very vanilla stuff, her own age, no faces or context show, and clearly at people's homes, not on a set (one of them yummy couple? or yummy double? I though was very interesting! I looked it up afterwards! )

Do these people actually make a living? Are they doing it for fun? Are they being forced or coerced? What happens if someone recognizes you in real life? More questions than answers from me!

IKidYouKnot · 25/12/2021 14:45

It's a part of a bigger trend of content creation on the internet. There are lots of people who try to create a business by having blogs, youtube channels, gaming streamers, instagram influencers, so there will be self made porn created and distributed too.

I'd imagine that only a small number of people can make a living doing any of these things?

steff13 · 25/12/2021 14:48

I subscribe to a photographer's page. It's not porn.
