I thought it would be fun to create a list of safe conversation topics for Christmas get togethers, I will start but feel free to add to this list!

This is copied and on the back of an opposing thread about banned topics.

New Years resolutions

How much of a bastard Alan Rickman is in love actually

I don’t find presents safe. Someone always gets upset that the portmerion fruit bowl they bought doesn’t reach your top ten gifts ever

llanfairfechan24 · 24/12/2021 08:38

If you have done a lot of walks during the year, the birds, dogs, other things you have seen.

Pets

Heruka · 24/12/2021 08:45

This is sounding pretty dull I have to say Grin

FoxgloveSummers · 24/12/2021 08:46

A lovely thing someone saw on the news eg sick child getting better.

What everyone thinks their spirit animal would be.

Mild games to stop the convo there eg 20 questions.

ThreeFeetTall · 24/12/2021 08:52

How you would spend a lottery win?

violetbunny · 24/12/2021 09:06

@ThreeFeetTall

How you would spend a lottery win?
Definitely not safe if the answer is "Spend it all on myself and none on you ungrateful lot" Grin

Yes, it’s giving me a vision of some Mnetter describing in detail the lesser spotted something she saw on her daily walk last March and everyone else around the table praying for death over the bread sauce.
Fmesanta · 24/12/2021 09:37

Eating in silence it is then!

That's funny about the Portmeirion fruit bowl. I bought one for my mum in the 80s and she loved it. Still uses it now!
georgarina · 24/12/2021 09:39

in a life or death situation, who would be sacrificed and eaten first

ALittleOldLadyTookInHerGoat · 24/12/2021 09:40

Positive reflections of the past year is very thanksgiving-y

KupoNutCoffee · 24/12/2021 13:24

Unfortunately, anyone that wants to make digs, ruin conversations and generally be obnoxious will somehow manage to bend any subject to their purpose...

'Well, my goal is to lose all this Christmas weight, I'm already feeling like a whale' while looking at aunt Mary who is all but a size bigger.

Holidays, dreams, favourite things. Plans for the new year. TV and movies you've seen / want to watch. Books.

Hobbies, activities and clubs, yours and others. Ones you want to try and ones you do.

I don’t know, FIL spent all of lunch talking about his steam cleaner, so this sounds positively scintillating after that!!
Sloth66 · 24/12/2021 13:54

I was going to suggest the weather, but that would would probably evolve into a climate change type discussion…

pretty safe if you don't want a christmas with any of the sods ever again.

Inthewainscoting · 24/12/2021 14:00

Gardening. Dull perhaps (though if everyone got tomato blight, a bonding opportunity!).

Insane things the dog/cat/hamster has done
Ditto small children

"What lovely nails you have, where did you have them done"
