To buy a turkey on the 24th?

Is that too late? Do the supermarkets restock turkeys on the 24th or do you just get what’s left over from the 23rd?

I've seen plenty of fresh turkeys in the supermarket on Christmas eve, they chuck out what they can't sell.

I had to help a friend with an emergency Christmas Eve shopping trip for a turkey.

She'd ordered a 15lb bird and due to a slight cock up on the communication front somewhere she received a £15 one.

It must have been the runt of the litter and in her husband's opinion a good sized budgie would have beaten it in a straight fight.

We toured Morrisons and Sainsburies and a smaller Asda and all of them had fresh turkey on the shelves.

I would say they were all the larger crowns and birds on display and were not reduced. However our trip was mid morning and the shops were open until quite late in the afternoon so they may have been reduced towards closing.

I've just been in aldi for some last minute bits and they had lots of turkeys. All with 30% off with a use by date of Boxing Day.

DiscoGlitterBall · 23/12/2021 20:25

Loads in Waitrose today, and real Christmas trees 1pence!!!

PicaK · 23/12/2021 20:28

Loads in morrisons tonight. Albeit not free range etc. I was stressing as I read there would be a turkey shortage this year.

Neurodiversitydoctor · 23/12/2021 20:31

I'd love to do this one year, just go shopping at 5pm on Xmas Eve and take whatever was left

Fairyliz · 23/12/2021 20:34

I’ve bought my turkey from Tesco on the 24th for the last 30 years. Always been quite a few and usually half price.

GratitudeGoddess · 23/12/2021 20:38

I bought my turkey from Marks and Spencer last year reduced to £15 from £80 🍗🦃

Lancrelady80 · 23/12/2021 20:41

I tried this three or four years ago. We ended up with sausages as all had gone by 23rd. None in Tesco, Sainsbury, Morrisons or Lidl, not in the town 8 miles in one direction or the larger one 16 miles the other way. Have been extra cautious since then.

I looked out of curiosity in our local Tesco yesterday - all they had left were two large £45+ birds. Everything else had gone.

I wish you good hunting though.

There were tons in Morrisons just now. I think you're nuts for going to a shop on Xmas Eve, but am sure you'll get a turkey!

dchange · 23/12/2021 20:45

Not bought mine. Heading to marks and Spencer tomorrow to pick one up. Confident it will be at a discount. Also my veggies.

To be honest, it's just the 4 of us so happy to leave everything to last minute.

MrsBudd · 23/12/2021 20:45

Loads of turkeys in my local Aldi today so should be fine I should think.

U8976532 · 23/12/2021 20:47

I've heard more people have bought frozen this year due to the "shortage" scaremongering a couple months ago so that could mean more fresh around?

CraftyGin · 23/12/2021 20:48

I always buy my turkey on Christmas Eve. I don't have space in the fridge otherwise.

Teaandtoastedbiscuits · 23/12/2021 20:54

I've nothing bought. Waiting for tomorrow. It will all be grand. If its not there's plenty in the freezer!

SillyBub · 23/12/2021 20:55

We nearly ended up with turkey this year. I don't like it so we always have a chicken but after trawling round 3 supermarkets this afternoon, there were no chickens to be found but absolutely loads of turkeys. The final supermarket thankfully delivered a small chicken that will yield no leftovers but had I have been looking for a turkey, I'd have been laughing.

Teaandtoastedbiscuits · 23/12/2021 20:56

@Neurodiversitydoctor this is my plan

JustLikeaJingleBell · 23/12/2021 20:56

I saw quite a few fresh ones my local Lidl yesterday

Goldbar · 23/12/2021 21:04

We don't have a lot of fridge space so always leave our Christmas shop until the last minute. We're confident we'll get a turkey tomorrow or, if not that, a nice ham or leg of lamb.

cherryonthecakes · 23/12/2021 21:04

I bought mine in Morrisons tonight. Full price but plenty of choice

nancybotwinbloom · 24/12/2021 23:19

Did you get one today op?
