If there was going to be more restrictions, wouldn't they have announced them by now?

There's lots of rumours of new restrictions starting on the 27th/Monday. I know it's very likely but why hasn't the government announced anything? Don't they usually give about a week or four or five days notice before actually implementing the restrictions? It's not like they just announce we're implementing this from tomorrow.
So we should have heard by now. They probably won't want to announce on Friday as that's too close to Christmas, so do you think an announcement will come out tomorrow (Wednesday) or Thursday?

Both prior lockdowns were announced overnight to start the next day so we never know.

In Scotland and wales they have announced new restrictions from next week already.

pinkcattydude · 21/12/2021 23:25

Last year they announced on 21st in the evening that our Christmas was essentially cancelled they have plenty of time to change things for 27th

Imdreamingofapeacefulxmas · 21/12/2021 23:27

Surely from 29th so people can enjoy Bank Holiday and I can enjoy my illuminated walk on 28th.

Raquelos · 21/12/2021 23:27

BJ doesnt have the political capital to do the sensible thing and and call it before Xmas which is what the science calls for. As a result of his absolute calculation of self interest he will leave it until after Xmas at the cost of many lives. He really is amoral scum, worse he's not even that good at the job.

Crunchymum · 21/12/2021 23:31

Maybe they'll replace the Queen's speech with BJ's lockdown announcement? Grin

(They won't.... obviously)

EasterIssland · 21/12/2021 23:32

Cases are dropping off (in London at least ) so there might be proof that no restrictions are needed anyway. The virus is following the pattern in sa , go up quickly but also plateau quickly and cases start going down.

SickAndTiredAgain · 21/12/2021 23:35

I agree, because I thought any future measures had to be voted on (they had to vote to bring back masks the other week didn’t they?)
There isn’t time now to recall parliament and do it, is there?

Lorriestakingppe · 21/12/2021 23:38

pinkcattydude

It was actually Sat 19th December, I remember vividly where I was and what I was doing so we did have a bit of time to digest it Sad

CeibaTree · 21/12/2021 23:43

These bloody 2 week restrictions better start early in the new year as I need them to be over by the 23rd for my eldest's long awaited birthday party 🤞🤞🤞

Lolingokay · 21/12/2021 23:48

@EasterIssland sorry where did you read that? I just Googled and cases in London were over 70k on Sunday and over 76k yesterday.

@SickAndTiredAgain that's a good point I had forgotten about the recess! But the recess ends on 5th January, surely they wouldn't wait till then?

@Lorriestakingppe yes you are right I remember telling 10 year old DS the next morning - his response ‘tier 4? There were only 3 when I went to bed, mum I think he’s making it up!’

Luredbyapomegranate · 22/12/2021 00:02

Because cases are rising but they don’t think anyone will comply with C’mas lockdown so they will hold till 26/27th in the hope that hospitalisations will be manageable and they won’t have to do it. See massive cabinet row for details.

Lolingokay · 22/12/2021 00:08

@Luredbyapomegranate but if anything the cases will probably rise by a lot after Christmas because of people travelling across the country to see their families and having huge gatherings. If they wait till the 27th to make an announcement then they would only start restrictions maybe a week after? Which kind of contradicts the rumours that the restrictions will start next week.

I got the impression this morning when he didn’t send any ministers out for interviews (usually they go out only to deny something to it to be announced an hour later) that he was waiting on Nicola Sturgeon doing her announcement so he could decide what he was doing 🤔 She didn’t go that harsh (in my opinion) and other than saying be careful, isn’t putting anything in place til after Christmas but he came out looking proud as punch as soon as she was done with this big announcement nothing was going to be changing before Christmas as if he’s just decided that off his own back. He copies her every move 🙈

Not necessarily.
We're past the peak of Christmas parties, schools have mostly broken up, extra curriculars have finished, Christmas shopping largely done, lots of grocery shopping on pre-booked deliveries.
For many people the chance of picking up the virus this week and passing it on at Christmas before symptoms develop is going down compared to normal life in the last few weeks.
Not everyone has big Christmas get-togethers anyway.

The longer he leaves it the better in my opinion.

There are several accounts on Twitter reporting that the numbers are slowing down just with the current restrictions

There are rumours ig might be for a month starting on the 27-28th.
Flittingaboutagain · 22/12/2021 03:59

They waited for a non Christian festival and announced the night before twice last year didn't they?

CheshireDing · 22/12/2021 04:25

OP do you not remember last January where they let children go to school for one day !?

That was really sensible, ‘ they’ve just been with their immediate families but let’s put them in a class of 30 for one pointless day’

That was absolutely the breaking point of annoyance in this whole thing to me

Kenwouldmixitup · 22/12/2021 05:02

And 10 day quarantine now reduced to 7 days. Maybe the end is in sight?

User762980 · 22/12/2021 05:17

Parliament will have to be recalled which apparently takes about 48hrs, he has already said that, so the earliest really is Monday 27th for that, I doubt it will be 24th -26th, so 27th for vote to start on the 28th maybe

CeibaTree · 22/12/2021 09:44

I haven't seen those rumours - please tell me it wasn't in the Telegraph? As theirs seem to be the most reliable leaks..
